Rest in Peace Mr. Silber.
September 14, 2010
In 1961 I was fired by the Christian Science Monitor after I wrote a favorable review of a Symphony Hall Peggy Seeger concert (the review was admittedly political; I mentioned the fact that Peggy's husband, Ewan MacColl, had been denied a visa by the State Dept.). A couple of weeks later I received the following telegram: "Monitor loss may be Sing Out gain; call me." Signed of course, Irwin. I had just taken a new job, but I've never forgotten his support.

I would see Irwin at Folksay, the Saturday night square dances at the Furriers Union Hall on W.28th St in the late 40's.He was a hero then and a hero now. May he rest in peace.(I still have the People's Song Book.)
