Stephen Cannell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 1, 2010.
Stephen J. Cannell, the voracious writer-producer of dozens of series that included TV favorites "The Rockford Files," "The A-Team" and "The Commish," has died at age 69.

Cannell passed away at his home in Pasadena, Calif., on Thursday night from complications associated with melanoma, his family said in a statement on Friday.

During three decades as an independent producer, he distinguished himself as a rangy, outgoing chap with a trim beard who was generally identified with action dramas full of squealing tires and tough guys trading punches.

But his range was greater than for which he was given credit. "Tenspeed and Brown Shoe" was a clever detective drama starring Ben Vereen and a then-unknown Jeff Goldblum in 1980. "Profit" was a shocking saga of a psycho businessman that was unforgettable to the few viewers who saw it: Fox pulled the plug after just four episodes in 1996. With "Wiseguy" (1987-90), Cannell chilled viewers with a film-noir descent into the underworld that predated "The Sopranos" by more than a decade.

"The Rockford Files," of course, became an Emmy-winning TV classic following the misadventures of its hapless ex-con private eye played by James Garner.

"People say, 'How can the guy who did "Wiseguy" do "The A-Team"?' I don't know," said Cannell in an interview with The Associated Press in 1993. "But I do know it's easier to think of me simply as the guy who wrote 'The A-Team.' So they do."

During his TV heyday, Cannell became familiar to viewers from the ID that followed each of his shows: He was seen in his office typing on his Selectric before blithely ripping a sheet of paper from the typewriter carriage, whereupon it morphed into the C-shaped logo of Cannell Entertainment Inc. That was all the idea of his wife, Marcia, he said, and it "appealed to my sense of hooey. ... I'm a ham."

He was also an occasional actor, most recently with a recurring role on ABC-TV's series, "Castle."

A third-generation Californian, Cannell (rhymes with "channel") got into television writing scripts for "It Takes a Thief," "Ironside" and "Adam 12." It was a remarkable career choice for someone who had suffered since childhood from severe dyslexia (he became an advocate for children and adults with learning disabilities).

Cannell in recent years had focused his attention on writing books. His 16th novel, "The Prostitute's Ball," will be released this month.

"I never thought of myself as being a brilliant writer, and still don't," he said in the AP interview. "I'm a populist. With 'Rockford,' we were never trying to be important. And as thoroughly hated as it was by critics, I loved 'The A-Team.' I thought it was really cool."

He was a producer of the feature film updating "The A-Team," released earlier this year.

Cannell is survived by Marcia, his wife of 46 years, their three children, and three grandchildren.

My deepest condolences to the Cannelll family. I can't tell you how many hours I spent watching all the programs Mr. Cannell produced. Television has never been the same since his passing. All quality and enjoyable programs cease to exist since his talent left with him. My deepest sympathies,RIP

My family grew up with Steve's wife Marcia. Almost every day, Steve would roar by our house in Linda Vista, in his yellow Chevy convertible, to see Marcia. He was SO nice to us littler kids. I was fortunate to run into them, after they were married, at great parties in Pasadena & San Marino. Steve would NEVER call me by name...It was always: "Hey Marcia....Guess who's here...It's Weatherwaxs' little sister!" I loved that. It's 2022 & I still find it difficult to fathom that such a 'force' & all around great guy, (not so common in Hollywood), is gone from us. Rest with the angels Steve; you are not forgotten. xxx, Sari....Jonny Weatherwax's little sister

It's Sep 2021 and I just found out that Stephen J. Cannell had passed in 2010. I LOVED that man! His TV Shows were FUN to watch and usually showed viewers how compassion for others helped people make it through the day. His stories weren't brutal, all ages could watch, be entertained, and be assured that goodness lived in the common man. Loved to watch him in the bit parts he played in his shows and also at the end of the credits - he was the essence of passion, energy, and a love of life. Between work and the sadness of some personal losses, his shows lifted my spirits whenever I could catch them. Many Thanks to his family for sharing him with the world - he's been a blessing to millions upon millions through the years!

To be considered one of the greatest writer, producers of Hollywood, a writer the had the ability to entertain and intrigue through his unique ability to put on screen the depth usually found in print. A personality to be greatly missed on the court and off. Condolences to family and friends.

I had the honor of meeting Steven at a book signing , " Three shirt Deal " in Lake Tahoe, Nev. I will never forget the ride up. It was the first I had ever seen it snow. I was writing a musical , and in my forties Dsylexic. I had the great oppertunity of asking him advice on that matter, and Steven was very encouraging. My second cousin Sam Gemette worked for Steven for a long stretch of years back when Hollywood was still Hollywood. He worked sound in many series. I was connecting the degrees with Kevin Spacey also employed by Canell. You see it was Spacey's characters that gave me an aphipany to write this musical. Meeting Mr. Steven Cannell was a great experience as he gave me great advice and signed my book along with the title of my musical. When I heard he passed I couldnt beleive it. I wouldnt. The dslexia is a forver condition I have , and my musical was a change in my life to keep living. Mr. Cannell, gave me the motivation and advice I needed to carry on with both aspects , I so am very thankful, and I remember him talking about his love , his wife as his inspirations in writing the mystery novels. I thought that was romantic, therefore I express my deepest sympathies to the Cannell Family. The world lost a genuine good soul. Not many left in this bussiness not with the visual mind of His , and what a writer he was. So much to offer and offer he did. Thank God he filmed those clips on tid bits for the fans questions. God Bless the family , Mrs. Cannell, Know that your husband was deeply in love with you. a true writers heart. Thats why writing worked for him, he wrote from the heart as well. What a loss. I just heard that Steve had died this year on the CBS show,Sunday Morning.I grew up in Pasadena and went to school with Marcia, but I knew Steve from his family's furniture store and my sister Linda. Over the years I followed his career in the news and on TV. Now I am sorry I never let him know how much it meant to me personally when he talked about what it is like to be dyslexic. Thanks to him and all he accomplished, I felt he articulated so well the fact that to be dyslexic was not synonymous with stupidity. Please accept my sincere sympathy to all his family.

Joan and I met Marcia and Steve on the beach in St. Bart sixteen years ago. We always agreed to arrive on Feb.4th each year. The lunches and dinners every day with them were the the high point of the trip. To us, he was'nt Stephen J. Cannell the big Hollywood guy, but our friend Steve, a decent and warm human being.
Coming to New York, he would call me from the plane, "Are you taking me to that restaurant downtown?" (Sammy's Romanian) Joan and I miss him a lot. They don't make them like Steve anymore. Sleep well dear friend.

Dear Marcia & family. I have a broken heart over Stephen's passing. When I lived in CA in 1990, I was fortunate to obtain a position at Stephen J. Cannell Productions in Hollywood. Cannell Productions became my second family. Stephen cared about his employees and we cared for him. I lost a daughter of my own, Cannell Productions and my co-workers gave me money to fly my daughters remains back to my home town for burial. You never forget those who truly care and touch your heart. There isn't enough words to express what a classy and warm hearted individual he was. Stephen will be missed by all that you can believe.

With a sad heart,

Also, people please note that Stephen J Cannell Productions did not have the "Sit boo boo Sit" logo. That was UBU Productions. Total different company.
