Freddy Schuman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 19, 2010.
NEW YORK (AP) - Freddy Schuman, the fan known as "Freddy Sez" who banged a spoon against a skillet at Yankee Stadium for more than two decades, has died. He was 85.

The Yankees said Schuman died Sunday at Lenox Hill Hospital.

New York put some of his memorabilia, including a sign and Yankees jacket, on display inside Gate 4 at the ballpark Monday and said it will become part of a display at the team museum. Fans lined up to have themselves photographed while banging the back of his pan with a small spoon.

The Yankees held a moment of silence for Schuman before Game 3 of the AL championship series against Texas, and fans chanted "Fred-dy! Fred-dy!"

Schuman had attended Yankees game since 1988, gaining notoriety for his signs that began "Freddy Sez."

The Yankees said he "was an iconic Yankees fan who brought life, youthful exuberance and cheer to Yankee Stadium" and "Freddy endeared himself to all those he came in contact with."

I am so saddened to hear of the loss of Freddy. I had the honor and privilege of not just knowing Freddy but appearing on the cover of his newsletter, the cover of his calendar (also Miss April!) and in his book. Freddy was the ultimate Yankee Fan. He was just as much a part of the Yankee Stadium atmosphere as "The Bat" at the old Stadium and that famous facade. I loved bringing people to the stadium and having them enjoy the "Freddy Experience" - banging on the frying pan, reading his signs and listening to his stories. He was kind, sweet and a Yankee legend. My deepest sympathies go out to Freddy's family, especially Susie. He always spoke so fondly of her.
This has been a year of great loss for the Yankees and their fans. So many of our beloved are gone. The memories live on. Thank you, Freddy for the memories. Lots of Love,
Jeanne Carras, Your Calendar Girl

My wife and I hurried out of St. Patricks Cathedral after Columbus Day Mass to get where we were supposed to be for the start of the parade.
I have always seen freddy somewhere along the parade route and always give him a big hello.
This time was no different.
We spotted him at about 46th street and I made a bee line right for him when I saw him.
I asked him for the spoon and he said" you are the first person to ask me today to bang the pan".
I told him I lived in the Bronx have seen him many times at Yankee stadium and knew who we was.
My wife though I was nuts to stand there and bang his little pan with the metal spoon.
Little did I know i would read of his passing exactly one week later.
I will never forget that special moment we shared with Freddy on 5th Ave. that morning.
The pan and spoon has fallen silent.
RIP and God Bless you Freddy you gave a lot of people a moment joy for many, many years.

First, I want to offer my condolences to the Schuman family. I had my picture taken with Freddy on April 18th before a game against Texas and banged on his pan numerous times over the years. Seeing Freddy with his signs and pan is as much a part of the Yankees as hearing Bob Sheppard's one of a kind voice was. I want to thank the Yankees for keeping Freddy alive by adding his memorabilia to the team museum. It won't be the same without Freddy at the games. Rest in Peace, Freddy "Freddy Sez" Schuman.

I'll miss hearing your pan in the background on TV when I watch the games on YES. I always knew when Freddy was at the game when watching them on TV. What a guy, what a story, what a Yankee Fan.

Freddy was the ultimate Yankee fan. You weren't a Yankee fan until you had banged Freddy's pan, then you were in the club. He always accentuated the positive, that is what I will most remember about Freddy. He will always have a special place in the hearts of Yankee fans. Rest in peace.

Sincere condolences to Freddy's Family. He was as much a fixture in the stadium as the facade. It has been a tough year for the Yankee family with the passing of George Steinbrenner, Bob Sheppard,Ralph Houk and now Freddy.
I am happy I had the opportunity to hit the pan so many times and watch how Freddy inspired all fans with his signs. He will be missed.
God Bless, and Go Yankees.

I had many opportunities to enjoy Freddy's signs over the years; they were ALWAYS appropriate for each day's crisis or highlight. My daughters, who are now adults, would anxiously wait for him to come by so they could bang on the pan. He will be sorely missed by Yankees fans of all ages. The sound of the spoon on the skillet will echo forever; it may not be heard in our ears but it will be heard in our hearts. My sincere condolences to the Schuman family.

I remember him at the games and know that a little we have all lost a little of what being a Yankee fan is. He gave his all to his team and by doing so brought all Yankee fans a little closer. I know I will miss his presence and I do know that he and other Yankee fans will always be a part of each and every game.

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow kindred spirit and the family at this time. Perhaps, the time at MC was both formative and important to our comrade; it certain was inspiring to us. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any man's death diminishes me". We are sorry for the loss. Freddy was a "Jasper" in spirit, even without the degree.

To the Schuman family,

Freddy was a kind of fan you just don't see anymore in sports,he took being a fan to the next level.Simply he knew how to have a good time and encouraged others to bring their childhood to the ballpark and leave their troubles for the afternoon or evening and just have a knock out of a good time.
I'm not a New Yorker but I have a healthy respect for the sport and tradition. When I was playing ball myself we were blessed to have one of the greatest Yankee's of all time come to our games and afterwards he would tell both teams stories of Ruth and Gehrig and his name was Casey Stengel. He taught us alot about pride and respect for all facets of the game right down to the 10th man,the fans.
So Freddy-sez, you keep on cheering up in heaven because the fans will always hear you. Rest in Peace Yankee fan.

The robust dedication of fans like Freddy Schuman goes a long way in proving that baseball is, indeed, the "Great American Pastime." Although Freddy has left us, I'm sure that the sound of his spoon banging against a skillet will forever echo as long as there is a Yankees game playing somewhere. My condolences to Freddy's family, friends, and the New York Yankees.
