Loki Schmidt Obituary
City authorities in Hamburg, where Schmidt was born in 1919 as Hannelore Glaser, said she died Thursday at her home in the northern port city.
Beloved by Germans for her down-to-earth nature and devotion to her husband of nearly seven decades, Loki was also a passionate botanist who urged environmental awareness years before "green" became a buzzword.
Passionate smokers, the Schmidts made headlines in 2008 for lighting up in a Hamburg theater that had banned smoking. The pair met as schoolchildren and married in 1942.
Schmidt is survived by her husband and a daughter.

My wife is in Hamburg due the death of her mother in Norderstedt. When we talked on the phone today, she described the modest lives of the Schmidts and how much they have been loved by the people of Hamburg.

I was, and am, genuinely impressed by the fact that you choose to put the death of Loki Schmidt, wife of former West-German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, on your website. As long as I had known about Helmut Schmidt, I had known how effective of a leader he was at all levels, and had also known of his fine marital relationship with Loki. My thoughts and prayers are with him now.
