Greg Jarvis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 26, 2011.
Born in Detroit, Gregory Bruce Jarvis graduated from high school in upstate New York and went on to earn degrees in engineering. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1969 and was assigned to work on satellite communications technology.

After receiving an honorable discharge in 1973, Jarvis entered the private sector where he continued working in the field of satellite technology and was involved in the development and launch of several spacecraft. In 1984, he was chosen as a candidate for the space shuttle program.

On January 28, 1986, Jarvis was Payload Specialist 2 aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger. He and the other six crew members were killed when the Shuttle exploded seconds after lift-off.

Twenty-five years later we remember engineer Greg Jarvis and invite you to share memories and condolences in his Guest Book.

As the SpaceX launched today, I again think of the Jarvis family and the pain they went through that very day when we lost the Challenger. Wishing you peace and love Steve, your brother will never be forgotten for his bravery, even though I didn't have the chance to meet him. Thinking of Cindy today too, she was so much fun to work with. I am so sorry, I'll always remember her too.

In Hermosa Beach, CA, on the Strand, there are a couple of palm tress, a bench, and a tile mural dedicated to the Challenger and its crew. Greg Jarvis and his bike are in there, since he used to ride his bike along that stretch of ocean. I once lived there, and many times I stopped at that bench, looked at the faces in ceramic, remembering the day I heard the news, where I was, what it felt like. And in later years I have often taken my children to see the memorial, to teach them why it mattered. Thank you, Greg, and all of your team, for reaching for the stars so we could touch them too.
