Nora Sun Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 30, 2011.
TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) - Nora Sun, a former U.S. trade consul and granddaughter of the founder of Asia's first republic in China, has died in Taipei from injuries sustained in a car accident. She was 72.

Taiwan's government-owned Central News Agency reported that Sun died Saturday, quoting Shin Kong Memorial Hospital Superintendent Hou Sheng-mou. Hou could not be reached for comment Sunday, but another hospital official confirmed Sun's death.

That official spoke on condition of anonymity because she was not authorized to speak to the press.

Sun is the granddaughter of Sun Yat-sen, who led a revolution to topple China's Qing dynasty and establish the Republic of China.

Sun Yat-sen's efforts were followed decades later by a bloody civil war between his follower Chiang Kai-shek and Mao Zedong's communist forces. Chiang's Nationalists resettled in Taiwan in 1949 following their defeat.

Nora Sun was born in Shanghai in 1938, spent her yo uth in Hong Kong and Taiwan, and moved to the U.S. in 1962.

She began a career in the U.S. diplomatic service in the late 1980s, serving as a U.S. trade consul at different times in Ghougzhou, Shanghai and Paris. She quit her diplomatic career in 1994 to start her own trade company in Hong Kong, helping U.S. and European companies invest in China.

In recent years, she split her time between Shanghai, Hong Kong and the U.S.

She was in Taiwan for the centennial celebrations of the 1911 Chinese revolution led by her grandfather when she was involved in the Jan. 1 car accident.

She is survived by three sons.

To the the family of Nora Sun, please accept my deepest sympathy for the loss of your mother. May God comfort you during this time of sorrow. I don't think we ever met (unless we all were very young) but I grew up seeing pictures of your youth & hearing stories of your family, through my neighbors and your very proud grandparents (Dan & Ola Seigrist, my father's first cousin). No grandmother could have been more proud, as she talked about your father, about your mother's family history and of her three handsome grandsons in Arizona. It was a joy to share your in lives, through your grandmother's eyes. Again, may God bless and comfort your family, now and always.

Dear Family,
I was touched by Nora while I lived in Shanghai...we became friends and even went to Vietnam together on an SEA trip..what fun we had...buying small limes and bringing them back to Shanghai...don't think we could do that today. I will always have fond memories of Nora....such a lady! The world will miss her greatly.

Nora was married for several years to Connie Segrist, who was a former employee of Air America, Inc. Connie was an exceptional pilot and was involved in many U.S. Government clandestine operations. In his later years, working at Home Depot helping patrons find bolts and screws, few people knew about his exploits flying B-26s, B-117s and other military aircraft as a civilian. Nora was an elegant lady and her premature passing is sadly regretted. My sincere condolences to her three children.

My heart goes out to your entire family. When death reaches into our families and snatches away our loved one, the shock of loss can be the severest emotional blow of our lives. Grief is so difficult to endure that we suffer sleepless nights, empty days and a feeling of not knowing how to go on. God sees our tears and pain of heart. For He is near to those that are broken at heart; and those who are crushed in spirit he saves. He is healing the brokenhearted ones. He is there giving support to all who are falling, and is raising up all who are bowed down. So that the power beyond what is normal may be God’s and not that out of ourselves to help you go from one day to next. (Ps 147:3)

To the Sun family, with deepest sympathy on your loss. I grew up hearing stories of Nora's grandfather as I am daughter of chinese parents. We look forward to the time for the reunion of all families into a world of peace and security which has eluded mankind - Isaiah 2:4.

Dear Alan and Barbara,
My thoughts embrace you and the whole family. May you find strength in the love and memories of your so very special mother. She was such a wonderful, facinating and dear, dear friend. I will miss her charming smile so very much.
After school days in HK we both lived in Taiwan where we were together at many special occations... Nora´s bridal shower, wedding, baby shower etc. Then our ways parted, Nora went to the States and I to Europe. We did not meet again until she moved to Paris. She visited my parents in the Black Forest, who knew her well from CAT times in Taipei and travelled on to Lake Constance, where I live. We met at school reunions and it was always as if we had seen eachother the day before although years lay in between. Old friendship ignores time.
Remember Barbara dear, we celebrated Nora`s birthday together with Nancy in Shanghai last summer. Such sweet and precious moments.
Much love and sympathy, Barbara Springweiler/ Pazolo, Germany

I am here reading my Mother's notice and I see Ms. Sun's. My Mother was the granddaughter (by marriage) of Oskar von Truppel one of several Governors of Tsingtao at the time Sun Yat-sen was active in China's revolution. History shares pages with her grandfather and my mother's grandfather at the same time and now the two granddaughters share pages as well. Sorry to hear of the loss and saddness to the family of Ms.Nora Sun.

To the family of Miss. Sun you have my deppest symphaty for the loss of your dear mother. There is nothing like the love of a mother. When Jesus was near his death one of the last things he asked was that John take care of his mother. To the family and friends remember the good times you had with your mother and wait for the time when death will be no more.

Please accept my sympathy for your loss. May you be comforted by the inspired message: "and he will wipe out every tear from their eyes and death will be no more; neither mourning nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.

I remember Miss Sun way back in the late froties, when she was hostess of a gardening program on WBKB-TV early Chicago Television. She would show how to grow little indoor gardens, the size of which could be contained on a small coffee table. She was an absolutely delightful little lady, charming.

RIP little table-top princess.
