Troy Jackson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 22, 2011.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Former popular streetball standout and Louisville player Troy 'Escalade' Jackson has died. He was 35.

Fred Corral with the Los Angeles County Coroner's office said Monday Jackson was found unresponsive in a hotel room shortly before noon on Sunday morning. An autopsy is pending.

Jackson, the younger brother of longtime NBA star Mark Jackson, spent two seasons at Louisville as a reserve under coach Denny Crum. His nephew, Mark Jackson Jr., is currently a freshman walk-on with the Cardinals.

"We lost a great man of God, my Uncle," Mark Jackson Jr. posted on his Twitter account. It "consoles my heart to know he's in a better place WE WILL ALL MISS YOU!"

Troy Jackson battled weight problems his entire career but became a popular fixture on the streetball circuit, where he carried the nickname "Escalade" because of his size. He was listed at 6-foot-10 inches and 375 pounds while being a part of the And1 Mixtape tour in 2002.

Louisville coach Rick Pitino, who coached Mark Jackson with the New York Knicks and coached against Troy Jackson while at Kentucky in the 1990s, said he was "saddened" by Troy's passing.

"He was a young man to lose his life and our prayers go to the Jackson family," Pitino said.

I first met you in 2001, I met you through your sisters-n-law, Dez and Nicole. It's 2016, but I have never forgotten about you or your family. Although Mark was away playing ball at the time and I never got a chance to meet him, your special family is close to my heart. I will never forget about the time you were driving us around in New York City, and you picked up my cell phone and called it a Cordless phone....lol.. They are right when they called you a gentle giant and sweet spirit. I had never lost anyone close to me until my father passed away a few months ago. I reflect and I only offer my sincere condolences to your family for the deep pain I know they still feel because you are not here. Your family has been heavy in my heart and I am praying for them. Be encouraged and just know Troy is in a better place. Thank you for being a beautiful part of my life. Love, Joy

2nd Entry; My first year of basketball Troy and i played for the championship bantam, St.pascal team.Even then he was a "Gentle Giant",always a leader because of his size. From day one on that court i realized that he would be the BIG force that would fuel-charge a 10year span of winning basketball for 12 other young men.He was not leading scorer every game but with Troy on your side the game became easier. That is like having Shaq on your team at the age of 11,12.Miss a shot. Dont worry Troy will get the rebound!Playing lazy defense. No problem! Troy will block the shot. At that age Troy was who he was going to be already. A selfless person who was so humble. Escolade we gonna miss u out here baby boy! R.I.P SAm I Am!!! Our prayers are with you H-o,Kev,Mark,Nephews... everytime i think about u big homie i will scribe a entry. H&L/BBe/Ocp

I'm missing you Big Homie! We were always taught don't question God's work! You were and are perfect friend and brother since the block. Now Big Homie your my Guardian Angel! You touched so many with your smile and laughter. I will miss your spiritual words for each day. I'm missing the debates already. You always said after I talk with you "God Is Good". One of the best things that I can reflect on you about is everything. My prayers are with your family. Some may say you left a void but Ina beg to differ. You can now look down and see how much and how many lives you touched. God said your work is done because the mansion that ESCALADE on the gate is yours so it's time for you to come home. You will never be forgotten because you live through so many people. I love you man! "REST IN PEACE" TROY "ESCALADE" JACKSON

Our paths crossed for what seems like brief moments in time, but the cherished memories will last forever. To Missy, the family, friends and admirers, he maximized his passion and talents to the best of his abilities. Through the game he loved, he was able to touch and impact many lives including my own. His bank account may not be as big as Mark’s, but the size of his heart was second to none. We all can model some of the characteristics that made Troy special. Troy lived, laughed and loved with an infectious exuberance. His vision was just as sharp off the court as it was on it. He took his shots and scored big time. He knew when to pass. He had countless assists. He was unselfish. He was a strong rebounder. He made everyone around him better. These attributes are important basketball skills and life skills. You don’t have to be a ballplayer to embrace these principles. Big Troy, thanks for playing your game and establishing your position as a true pioneer, gentlemen, and friend. You are forever in our hearts.

Ecclesiastes 9:11 states, "...time and unforeseen occurrence befall us all." It was sad to read about your love one's death as he was young and his death was unexpected. Please accept my condolences and be strengthen by the scripture at James 4:8 where Jehovah God invites all to "Draw close to him and he will draw close to you." By doing this you will find the peace you desire, the strength that you need, and the love Heavenly Father has to offer.
