Mitchell Page Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 14, 2011.
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) - Mitchell Page, who had a fantastic rookie season and played eight years in the major leagues before becoming a hitting coach for the St. Louis Cardinals, has died. He was 59.

The Cardinals say Page died Saturday. Team spokesman Brian Bartow said Sunday that the team was informed of Page's death by his agent. The cause of death was not known.

Page broke into the big leagues in 1977 and was an immediate hit with the Oakland Athletics, batting .307 with 21 homers and 75 RBIs. He also stole 42 bases and finished runner-up to Hall of Famer Eddie Murray in AL Rookie of the Year voting.

Page's numbers at the plate dropped off after his first season. The left fielder and designated hitter spent seven years with the A's and then played 16 games for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1984, finishing his career with a .266 average, 72 homers and 259 RBIs.

He was the Cardinals' hitting coach from 2001-04, counting star slugger Albert P ujols among his pupils. Most recently, Page served as a minor league hitting instructor for the Cardinals in spring training last year, but did not have a role with the team this year, Bartow said.

Mitchell Page - what a great teammate and friend. Strong as a bull and he could look intimidating which he was as a ballplayer. Yet one of the most kind and considerate guys you could ever meet. I hadn't seen Mitchell in over 20 years and had hoped our paths would cross again but sadly that will have to wait.

RIP Mitch

I sincerely offer my condolence. MITCHELL'S death has no doubt cast a shadow over you as you go about your daily life because death bring us face-to-face with the fact that he is gone too soon. His presence will be dearly missed. So despite the pain of grief, let it be your resolve to continue to work your way through pain and grief. The rich life that he led has left many memoriers.

as a native of oakland, ca.,my friends and i were priveleged to have one of the greatest teams in baseball history, winners of three consecutive world series. when free agency hit after the 76 season, and charlie finley refused to pay the high salaries that players were now going to get, we had to watch glumly, as each and every one of our stars bolted for other teams. just like that, we went from champs to chumps. but in this depressing darkness, a bright light emerged, in the form of mitchell page. a minor leaguer we acquired in a trade, page could hit for average and power, and had great speed. he gave us a reason to stick with our team, that better days could be ahead. we might have stunk, but we knew mitchell page would never let us down. it saddens me to hear of his untimely demise. he gave us hope, when there really wasn't any left. long live mitchell page. he will always be the rage of oakland.

In 1978 I met Mitchell Page at an A's/Mariners game & he, remembering me as a fan who'd called him on the phone several times from Indiana, invited me onto the field during their warmups. Mitchell signed all the autographs I wanted & even gave me one of his personalized Louisville Slugger bats. An incredible experience for a 15-year-old that I'll never forget. The bat is one of my most prized possessions. I remember Mitchell had an identical twin brother named Michael who also played baseball. Wonder what happened to him? Thanks so much for the memories, Mr Mitchell Page! Keith Ellis of Indiana
