Mr Volkmer was my boss for several years when he was in Congress and he was a good one. He was very hard-working and responsible, and as others have said he had a strong moral compass. He was chair of the NASA subcommittee of the House Science committee and I was on the staff. The newly-elected Reagan administration was threatening to cut the Landsat program which gives us such beautiful and useful images of the earth from space. He wanted to see the program continue, in the private sector if necessary. One day after a hearing on the issue he said to me "Rad, let's do a bill on this." That's all, those were my full instructions, although of course I did know his views about the worth of the Landsat program. I made sure I respected the trust he put in me by keeping him fully informed as I drafted the bill: one day I got back from him, overnight, a draft marked with his comments. One was "section 6(b) on page 4 seems to contradict section 11(C iii) on page 9: He had read the bill VERY carefuly. And he was right, the two provisions did seem contradictory. But it was because of my poor writing, they were not meant that way, so I could just rewrite and fix the problem. That is just one example of how he was so serious and thorough. In the end, Pres Reagan signed the bill and Landsat was saved. Rad Byerly May 5, 2011

To the Volkmer family.
I'm so sorry to read of Harold's passing. I served with him in the Congress, and he was a good and steady friend, both personally and politically. Harold and all of you are in my prayers.

Now this man (Harold Volkmer) was the kind of man who could have been either a Democrat, or a Republican, or even an Independent, and still would have been well liked. His passion for the rights of the people was extraordinary which reminds me of Christ and his love for his fellow man. Christ loved us so much that he bore our sins, all of our sins. All we have to do is accept him as our Lord and Savior. I think Harold would like that, I know I would.

Harold Volkmer was always a friend and always made us feel welcome in his Washington, DC office on our visits to that city. His energy and concerns helped the people of northeast Missouri and his leadership has been missed. He and Lee Viroel were always willing to listen and sometimes act on our concerns. We have missed him since we both retired. Our sympathy to all the family. Lee and Beverly Keck, former publishers of the PALMYRA SPECTATOR.
