Hubert Schlafly Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 26, 2011.
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Hubert "Hub" Schlafly, a key member of the team that invented the teleprompter and rescued decades' worth of soap opera actors, newscasters and politicians from the embarrassment of stumbling over their words on live television, has died at age 91.

Schlafly died April 20 at Stamford Hospital after a brief illness, according to the Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, which handled the arrangements. A funeral was held Tuesday at St. Mary Parish in Greenwich, where he was a longtime resident.

He did not use a teleprompter himself until he was 88, while rehearsing his speech for induction into the Cable Television Hall of Fame, close friend Thomas Gallagher said.

Schlafly helped start the TelePrompTer Corp., eventually becoming its president and accepting an Emmy Award for the company in 1999 - a few years after winning one himself in 1992 for his contributions in the cable television industry. He held 16 patents, Gal lagher said.

Cablevision chairman Charles Dolan called Schlafly "the cable industry's most innovative engineer" and "one of its ablest executives."

"Whether you were his friend or competitor, he was always congenial and supportive and probably had more friends than anyone," Dolan said in a statement Tuesday.

Schlafly was born Aug. 14, 1919, in St. Louis. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame, where he studied electrical engineering. He worked for General Electric and the MIT Radiation Laboratory before joining 20th Century Fox in New York City in 1947.

Actor Fred Barton Jr. wanted a way to remember his lines and approached Irving Berlin Kahn, nephew of composer Irving Berlin and vice president of radio and television at 20th Century Fox. Kahn went to Schlafly, then the director of television research.

"He wanted to have multiple units so you could look anywhere on the stage," Schlafly recalled in a 2008 interview with the Stamford Advoca te. "I said it was a piece of cake."

The result - a device with a motorized scroll printed in half-inch font- was named the TelePrompTer, which made its debut in 1950 on the soap opera "The First Hundred Years," said Laurie Brown, author of the book "The Teleprompter Manual."

Schlafly told interviewers the second T in the name of the device, now known as the teleprompter, was capitalized originally to make the name distinctive.

The device evolved eventually into a monitor facing the person appearing on screen and rolling a script at reading speed.

"It revolutionized television and improved the quality of on-air performers," said Jim Dufek, a professor of mass media at Southeast Missouri State University. "It also made the politicians look smarter because they were looking right into the camera."

Former President Herbert Hoover became the first politician to use a teleprompter in 1952, when he gave the keynote speech at the Republican National Con vention in Chicago.

Every president since then has used the device - now also such a staple of television news that occasional technical glitches can turn a news report into unintentional comedy.

In the 1970s, TelePrompTer Corp. owned cable franchises in 140 markets and served about 1.4 million customers.

A graveside service for Schlafly is planned Thursday in Louisville, N.Y.

I know that much time has passed since Hub died but I want to record that he was a very exceptional man. He was kind to all, unselfish to a fault, had a very deep faith in God and was an outstanding electrical engineer with world changing inventions as the father of sattelite television and the teleprompter. I was honored and blessed to know him as a friend.

Dearest "Uncle Hub,
You are the last of this generation of
McNeill's & Schlafly's ...
(& may it be known that it is doubtful that The Lord can possibly create Men
like You, Dad or "Uncle Hoob" anymore)

Truly one-of-a-kind,(or Two, including dear Aunt Lee,) for adopting me as one of your very own. God bless you both!

I will miss you more than words can express ...

Until I see you both, when my day comes

With all my love,
Trish McNeill from Alaska

P.S.
In heaven each Soul shall retain
a special affection for those
to whom It was united on Earth.

Glorified Souls preserve intelligence
and have all the memories of their Earthly life.

They are marvelously active,
They know what happens here below,
They love us as of old.

God will no more permit separation
in Eternal Life of those He has joined
than He permits it here below.
Amen

My condolances to the Schlafly family. When I was a teenager, Hub was a guest at my father's Dude Ranch, Cinnabar, in Peekskill N.Y. During World War II, he would come every weekend and tell me stories about him working in the theater. Later my mother Constance Walter, told me about all of his famous inventions. I was so proud to have known him, the world will miss such a great man. Doreen Walter Sloan

Family and Friends of Mr. Hubert J. (“Hub") Schlafly, Jr,

Pease accept the sympathy of the Board of Trustees and friends of the Gregorian University Foundation on the occasion of the death of your cherished Uncle Hub, a dear relative and caring friend. Hub had a very full life and with his exceptional technical ability easily established a reputation as a creative inventor and remarkable technician. However, it may be that his personal charm and generosity even surpassed these impressive gifts. We will all miss Hub, who is now with his beloved Lee and receiving the just reward of a truly committed Roman Catholic life and of his professional and intellectual dedication and contribution to the world of television. May he rest in peace, and may all of us who loved him be consoled and comforted.

It is not insignificant that Hub died during Holy Week, the Lord may well have wished that this year he celebrate Easter in a much fuller way and experience the realization of his faith in the resurrection of the dead. I will offer two Masses for Hub, although to tell you the truth I do not believe that he stands in need of them; but you, his close relatives and friends, will benefit from our prayers. Hub might well now be busy up in heaven arranging places for his nieces and nephews and other dear relatives and friends.

May Hub and all the faithful departed rest in peace, and may God give all of us much peace because of our faith in the resurrection of Jesus and so of Hub and all the Lord’s faithful followers. May the joy and blessings of Easter be yours; given Hub’s life, joy and peace of soul because of all that God did in and through him are much more in place than grief.

With our sympathy and prayers, in Him,
Robert F. O’Toole, S.J., S.S.D.
President

I grew up in St. Louis hearing my father's generation speak with admiration and affection about Cousin Hub. I didn't actually meet him until I was well until my adulthood. My wife Ulrike and I really got to know Hub when we became members of the Order of Malta. There are no superlatives adequate to describe such a wonderful man. He was immensely accomplished in his profession, and even more impressive as a person. Like many others, Ulrike and I have been tremendously enriched by knowing him.

Uncle Hub, was a gentle, holy and admirable man. I always heard only good about him, and was blessed enough to meet him on 3 occasions. To Jeff he is one of his most admired family members, not only because of his vision and innovation, but because if his faith and great service to our Lord and His Church. I sent a photo once of our daughter Miah at 2. He sweetly wrote back about sharing the photo with his visitors and friends. We only wish we could have known him more.
