Betty Fox Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 17, 2011.
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - The mother of cancer research activist Terry Fox, whose marathon cross-Canada run inspired a global fundraising effort to fight the disease, has died.

Betty Fox, who was in her early 70s, died Friday morning, her family said in a notice posted on the Terry Fox Foundation website.

Terry Fox was a young bone cancer survivor with an artificial leg who set out in 1980 on his "Marathon of Hope" to raise money and awareness about the disease. He suffered a recurrence of the disease and halted the run in Ontario after covering nearly 5,400 kilometers (3,355 miles) in 143 days.

He died in 1981 at age 22 after becoming the youngest person to be awarded the Order of Canada at that time and is considered a national hero.

Betty Fox kept her son's cancer-fighting legacy alive by organizing runs, raising funds and helping launch the research institute and foundation that promotes Terry Fox Runs across the globe.

Dear Rolly and family,

I am deeply sorry for you loss of your amazing, kind, generous, inspiring Betty! We were neighbors on Lynwood Street in the 1980's, I always remember Betty as always smiling and having such a sunny disposition despite all the hardships. You as well Rolly! I wanted to thank you for the time when I was 13 and had an accident on the street, your family dog had found me unconscious in the forest which saved my life. Never had the chance to speak with you as I had moved shortly after that. I want to Thank you very much to you and your dog for giving me a second chance at life. Your a hero, like Terry and Betty too! God Bless-

To Rolly, Fred, Darrell and Judith

I am sorry...so very sorry for your loss.

Your Mom, lost a son. She, with all of you, left a legacy. Terry was so loved, all over the world..a young, sweet man, wanting to make a difference..and he did.
His name is in every household..we loved him. Betty took up the challenge, not alone..with all of you..she was the force behind the cause..she could not have done it without you, her family.

She is with her boy now..she has waited such a long time..they have their "soft place"..to talk, and feel the joy of being...their souls to-gether, at peace.
ohh it has been a long wait for a mom.

May your heart find peace in your loss, and joy in knowing she is with him..she and Terry will be there for all of you.

God Bless,

sincerely,
"a mom too"

To The Fox Family

So many people have known you over the years. First with Terry and his remarkable work and a tender age and full of pain. We loved him and lost him, without knowing the sweet boy.

Then we met his mom, dad and siblings.

What an honor to have you in our lives.

God Bless you all and RIP Betty.

When I think of an outstanding citizen, family or cause one of the first names that would come to mind is any member of the Fox family. To take the tragic passing of their beautiful son/brother and carry out his vision shows the character of this family. The world is most definitely a much better place because of the Fox family. Locked Diary

When you loose a loved one
the diary is neglected
You forgot what it contained
awhile ago
The Mystery is ,where is the key?
Perhaps in Spirits keeping
Shall we leave it there
put it all to rest
Will then our strength be whole?

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I moved to Thunder Bay in 1979 and when Terry Fox ended his run here I remember how saddened we all were. Our daughter was born in Aug of 81 and we always told her the story of Terry Fox. We've driven past and have visited his monument MANY times and always bring visitors there to share in his story. Betty, you were a terrific mother of a wonderful boy. If I believe in anything, I know you and Terry are reunited in the great beyond. May you both rest in peace.

Our thoughts go out to the Fox family at this sad time. Betty was able to carry on Terry's dream. I lost my brother to cancer when he was 33 and know that we are all here for a certain time and purpose. She was meant to carry on his dream for him which she did. I am proud of what the Fox family for their huge contribution to the future for Cancer patients as every little bit counts.

Even though I did not know Terry personally, I went to the same Elemetary school "Wayota School" in Winnipeg - Transcona - and have that connection to him. His dream will never die.....

We lost a great Canadian today - Betty Fox. I had the priviledge & honour of meeting her, and her strength, courage and humility brought me to tears. I don't know how any parent can survive the death of a child, much less go on to accomplish what she did with her son's achievement and in his memory. We won't ever forget Terry, but she was the force that will propel his memory into eternity. It's no wonder she raised the greatest Canadian hero of all time. Cancer took her son, and then she gave him back to the world, for the betterment of all. Terry gave his life - Betty gave everything else. The world is a smaller place today for her passing.
