Kazimierz Swiatek Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 21, 2011.
MINSK, Belarus (AP) - Cardinal Kazimierz Swiatek, the former leader of the Catholic Church in Belarus who survived a Soviet death sentence and nearly a decade in the Gulag, has died at age 96.

The Catholic Church of Belarus said in a statement he died Thursday morning in a hospital in Pinsk. The cause was not specified.

Swiatek was sentenced to death for spying in 1939 by Soviet authorities, but escaped when Nazi Germany's forces occupied the city of Brest. After the Red Army regained control of Belarus in 1944, he was rearrested and served nine years in the brutal Gulag prison camp system.

Swiatek became archbishop of the Minsk diocese in 1991, was named a cardinal in 1994 and headed the church in Belarus, which counts about 15 percent of the country as believers, until 2006.

Thank God for this mighty Christian man! His life is a powerful witness to the saving grace and leadership of Christ. May his family and the people of Belarus be comforted by the example of the Cardinal's life and by the God he served.

My sincere condolences to the Swiatek family. It is hard to lose someone close to us.
But please know that God does not forget our loved ones or us as we have to cope with this loss. We are encouraged to throw all our anxieties upon him because he cares for you".

I AM SO INSPIRED WHEN I READ THE HISTORIES OF GOOD MEN'S LIFES, AND HOW DIFFICULT IT WAS IN THEIR TIME, TO OVERCOME ALL ADVERSITIES, PERSEVERE IN THEIR FAITH, AND SERVE GOD. I CAN SEE YOU BEING WELCOMED INTO HEAVEN AND BEING HUGGED BY OUR LORD, AND CONTINUE YOUR LIFE WITH HIM.
