Scotty Robertson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 18, 2011.
RUSTON, La. (AP) — Scotty Robertson, a former Louisiana Tech coach and the first coach of the NBA's New Orleans Jazz, has died.

Louisiana Tech athletic director Bruce Van De Velde, who confirmed Robertson's death on Thursday, says the longtime college and pro coach will be remembered as "one of the all-time greats at Louisiana Tech."

Robertson, who had battled cancer in addition to a stroke last year, was 81.

During his years in the NBA, Robertson also served as head coach with the Chicago Bulls and Detroit Pistons.

He coached 10 seasons at Louisiana Tech, compiling a mark of 165-86, and was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 1997. Later in his career, he was an assistant with Phoenix and a scout with Miami.

"He was great for us, Kelly (Tripucka) and I in particular," said former Piston guard Isiah Thomas, currently the head coach at FIU. "He taught us a lot on and off the court. He was an old-school coach who cared about players. He'll be missed."

Me and my son Jackson first met the Coach and Jet about five years ago when we were guest of Jimmy Mitchell at their hunting camp. My son was about ten at the time and new to duck hunting so Coach kind of took him under his wing so to speak. We spent many hour out by the fire at night lisening to the story's the Coach would share. He had an incredible since of humor and would often rib Jimmy and me about our shooting and calling skills. Every year when we were getting ready to make our hunting trip my son would always ask if "Coach was going to there". I never met any of his family but heard him speak of his wife many times. A few things I picked up about him was his love of family, sports and people. If you talked to him at all you knew right away he loved helping kids. This year wont be the same looking down on that end of the blind and him not there calling the shots. He made an everlasting imprint on me and my son. May God BLESS you in the days to come.

One of the first images when I watched basketball is seeing you coach against the Hawks. I don't remember which team you were coaching but I'm remember the intro as you the coach. Hope all is well with you.

I remember Scotty when he was an assistant coach under Cotton Fitzsimmons with the Buffalo Braves. He was a nice pleasant, friendly man who must have been beloved by his players at La Tech.

Scotty was such a humble and unassuming man; he became my friend while I was his pastor, supporting me in every way, and he never spoke of his career. He always wanted to talk about what I was doing. He was one of the finest men I have ever known, and he had a lasting impact on my life. I had lost contact with Scotty for the last 10 years, but I still remember his open invitation to come over and go duck hunting with him. I will miss Scotty. He was truly a great human being.
