Les Widdifield Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 2, 2011.
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Longtime New Jersey Devils scout Les 'Doc' Widdifield has died. He was 86.

The Devils announced the death of Widdifield on Friday, saying he died in his hometown of Saskatoon in Canada. He had been the Devils' Western Canadian Scout for nearly 25 years and was still working at the time of his death.

Widdifield joined the organization in 1986, being hired by his friend and former Devils general manager, Max McNab.

Current Devils president Lou Lamoriello called Widdifield a caring, family man.

Funeral services were on Friday in his hometown.

I had the great pleasure of watching Doc Widdifield play hockey in Kamsack Saskatchewan 50 years ago. Doc was notable for his heads-up play, the fact he wore a soft leather head gear, and somehow never fogged up his thick glasses.

Doc was tireless, fearless, and one of the great gentleman of that raucous game.

He was also a skilled telegrapher, and knew how to run a railroad, a team, and a very successful life.

Dear Twyla & Family,

I want to share with you my condolences with the passing of Doc. Since as long as I can remember, even the slightest mention of his name has elicited warm memories and joyful thoughts. His genuine kindness, compassion, and good nature have always been qualities that I have admired and tried to emulate. I am truly fortunate to have him as an inspiration of how to conduct oneself as a man, a husband, a father, a grandfather, and a friend.

Yours Truly,

Michael D. Zazulak

Doc, in the past we shared many a scouts meeting room table over the years and I always admired the fact that when you were asked for an opinion you had one and were always prepared to defend it.

Twyla and Family,
We were saddened to learn of Doc's passing ... I was in S'toon in May and didn't have another contact # - other than was in the tel. book ... Doc had a great life with significant achievements - especially his WW II contributions ... I enjoyed our years together with the NJ Devils ... regret he had some health issues over the past few years, but overall nothing but fond memories of a "Mans Man" for sure.
Respectfully,
Marshall & Barbara Johnston
