Barbara Scott Obituary

TORONTO (AP) - Barbara Ann Scott, who won Canadian's only Olympic title in women's figure skating, died Sunday. She was 84.

Her death was confirmed by Skate Canada. The Canadian Press said the cause of death wasn't known.

Scott won the Olympic title at the 1948 Games in St. Moritz, and won the Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada's top athlete in 1945, 1947 and 1948.

She was inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 1955. Dearest Family of Barbara  King,

We were so sad to hear of Barbara's passing and we offer our deepest sympathy. I know it is little consolation at this sad time, but it should be of some satisfaction to know that in her passing you can celebrate the end of a very long and productive life.

The measure of a life well-lived is not in how much money one has or what possessions they have accumulated, but rather through the lives they touched and the love they've shared. Her absence here on earth has left much sorrow  behind. If the outpouring of sympathy on her loss is any indication, which I know it is then you can proudly and confidently say that her life indeed was a life well lived.
Tom, I know you'll find peace and comfort in knowing that her loss is felt by all who knew and loved her.

In Sympathy,

Terri Floyd and Ron Ames

I would like to offer my sympathy to the family and friends of Barbara Ann Scott. A friend came across her obituary and forwarded it to me as she remembered the story of how I got my name. I never met Barbara, but I was named after her. My father was from Watertown, NY and he admired her skating, though he told me he never spoken to her. I'm not sure he ever told my mother why he wanted to name me Barbara Scott, but it worked out well as my mother's maiden name was also Scott, though no relation to Barbara. I read about Barbara in a book about skaters once and was pleased to see a photo of the lady I was named for. Barbara never knew she had touched a young man from Watertown in such a way that he would name his daughter after her. I hope she would have been pleased. I am proud to have her name.

You have my deepest sympathy. May good memories provide solace for your family during this challenging time; and may God provide you with the assurance that you will see your loved one again in paradise. John 17:3

Barbara, Our family feels a true loss. We grieve with your amazing husband. Makenzie is going to miss seeing you at church every week with her grandmother. You and your husband always dressed your very best and looking like a King and Queen. You will be missed so very much. You were so very famous but treated every person as if they were a close friend. You never acted as if you were above anyone else. You loved God and your husband so much. I know he misses you terribly as my family does. I feel honored just to have met you and I thank you for being so kind to my daughter. She loved seeing your gold medal, your outfits & the Barbara Ann Doll the most. We're still trying to find her a doll but they're hard to come by. We miss you Mrs. Barbara Ann.
Love, Mary Kay, Amanda & Makenzie

Our family would like to convey our condolences to the family of Ms. Scott. Our mother (the late) Marilee Martha Vaillant (nee McNeill) was a club professional in the late 50's in Port Arthur, ON and spoke of Ms. Scott often. I am not sure of they ever met, however our mothers love for figure skating is instilled in all members of our family. Thank you for her inspiration

I am so very sorry to hear of Barbara Ann's passing. I shed tears as I have been trying to find a way to connect with her since my mother's illness last fall. Barbara is a cousin to us through my maternal(late)grandfather's family and I so desperately wanted to unite and meet with her. My own daughter, ChloeAnne is a dancer and she looked up to her distant cousin Barbara with hope of someday meeting her. Our family is very sad to hear of this news.
