Our deepest sympathies to Alex, Bert and Lexi. We were shocked and saddened to hear the news and will always remember Bill with fondness and admiration. From the beginning of our lives in Tampa when you welcomed us and brought Kim there to lead the United Way, through our years at the Chamber to the pig roast as we left town. Your friendship and counsel were always appreciated and cherished. Bill was bigger than life and left bigger than life footprints and we were fortunate to know him.

Alex and family- I was devastated to just learn about Bill's death. We started in the United States Marine Corps together in November 1969 in the same platoon at OCS and then in the same Platoon at the Marine Corps Basic School where Bill won the top honor in our 250 Marine class as the honor man and winner of the Leadership award. We went to Vietnam together and served in combat and then on Okinawa and then as roommates when we got back to the States when we were stationed at Quantico. Bill was one of the finest Marines I ever served with and I say that having spent 35 years in the uniform of the Marines. General Tom Draude said it earlier that Bill embodied all the of the highest characteristics of service to our country in wartime. I look forward to sending you and the family some additional insights into his service before you all came to know him. I know he considered his family his highest calling and was so proud of all of you and i feel truly blessed to have talked to Bill on the phone several weeks ago and caught up on all the going ons. Bill McBride was and will continue to be an inspirational figure to all who strive to do good for others. I had the good fortune of working for him on the 1991 United Way fall campaign as a member of the Loaned Executive program. His energy and dedication inspired every one of us. He will never be forgotten. May God be with Alex, Lexi and Bert at this most difficult time.

Back in the mid 1970s when Bill joined Holland & Knight, he was assigned to be our Exchange Bancorporation Legal Counsel. I was starting a department called Policies and Procedures so I was sent to meet Bill. Over the next 5 years or so, Bill and I worked together on Regulations and Legal Documents for the bank. What a pleasure it was to work with such a kind, respectful man. Over the years, Bill and I frequently ran into each other in the elevators or hall ways in the old Exchange Bank Building and then in our new NCNB Headquarters that his firm shared with us. I'll never forget the sweet stories about his kids he would share in the elevator some years later as we both arrived early for work. One day another gentleman who knew Bill joined us and Bill introduced me to him as his "first boss" at Holland & Knight. I know my jaw must've dropped because I had never even thought about the fact that to Bill, I was his first client at the firm. That was Bill though; always one to praise and build up others. He surely gave me a surprise that morning with that introduction and I am very proud to have known him for all those years... One of the kindest men I've ever known. Alex, Lexi, & Bert: You have my sincere condolences. I've also known Alex for many years; from working at the bank to later finding out she was a distant cousin from NC. I recall being in meetings with Alex when she was pregnant with the children. My heart breaks for all of you and you will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I will miss my friend. He was my hero and I told him so. We met in 1985 at Tampa Chamber. When I was thinking of running for Tax Collector he said I'll support you. When he was running for Governor and came to Dade City and said so many nice things about me I reminded him he was running for Governor not me. I still have his bumper sticker on my truck. This is a terrible loss for our State and Community and for me. May his gifts to us never be forgotten. To Alex and the kids this comes at a difficult time of the year but he was where he wanted to be. I'm in Utah but my heart and thoughts are with you. May God bless you and give you peace.

Dear Alex, Bert, and Lexi,
Bill was one of my first visitors in Tampa when I arrived at USAA in 1996. As another Marine, we had instant rapport--especially when we learned we had both commanded the same rifle company in Vietnam. He shared a story that he had kept to himself for years and it made our bond even stronger. Like you, I will miss him deeply. He was a devoted husband and father, friend, and a fighting Marine. He embodied our motto,
Semper Fidelis!

I met Bill more than ten years ago when he was running for governor. It took no more than a few minutes to know he was truly larger than life. There could not be a more kind, intelligent, thoughtful and true gentleman. He exhibited to me what so many who joined his cause long knew--Bill was a leader in every sense of the word. Just a few months ago I went to his office and he welcomed me with that same graciousness I knew from years ago.
We are all poorer for this loss.
My deepest condolences to Alex, Bert and Lexi; thank you for sharing this amazing man with us.

On behalf of Fairway Village on Casey Road near Carrollwood Village, thank you for standing by us (pro bono) as our neighorhood faced a lawsuit threat over 10 years ago from 2 current homeowners who didn't want our neighborhood front entrances to be decorated for Christmas. Today we can only put up white lights...no red ribbons, no wreaths, no colored lights during the holidays at our subdivision entrances.
May all our bright lights, red ribbons be shining for you, Bill McBride and Holland & Knight.

Our sages tell us that a person's face is considered "a public place": others see us and are affected by what we show them. The Talmud (Baba Batra 9) explains that smiling at someone is an even higher form of charity than giving him money, because the smile will enhance the recipient's well-being on every level of body and soul.
