Soledad Mexia Obituary
Soledad Mexia (mah-HEE'-ah') died Friday at the Silverado Senior Living Hospice, said Dr. Stephen Coles of the Gerontology Research Group at the University of California Los Angeles.
Mexia was born in Mexico but moved to the United States when she was very young and become an American citizen, Coles said.
Her granddaughter, Rosalia Ferreira of San Diego, said Mexia loved to sleep.
"She would go to bed at 9 or 10 and not wake until 12 or 1 the next day," Ferreira said.
"Even when she was younger and alert, she always loved to sleep."
Mexia was a housewife most of her life, never working outside the home.
She didn't follow any special diet.
"But there was no junk food, I'll tell you that," Ferreira said. "It may have helped her keep her health."
Mexia had "no health issues whatsoever," she added. "She never took one pill for anything."
In addition, Ferreira said, her grandmother had a "very positive outlook on life."
"I never saw her with a bad attitude. She was always happy to be with her family," Ferreira said. "She loved to sing. That was my grandma."
The Gerontology Research Group is an organization of physicians, scientists and engineers who validate supercentenarians, people 110 or older.
The world's oldest person, Misao Okawa of Japan, is 115, Coles said.
The next three oldest people are from Michigan, New York and Massachusetts. They are all 114, Coles said. Mexia was the fifth-oldest person on the planet when she died.
The distinction of oldest California resident now goes to Opal Thompson, who is 112.

My grandmother was an amazing woman. She loved life and taught her grandchildren the value of life and love. She had a great sense of humor and believed in old fashion values. She will be missed by all who knew her. Two children's treats were "Wilitos (Crapes garnished with Sugar and Cinnamon) / Tortillitas Con Huevo (Scrambled eggs, fresh salsa, and monterey cheese garnished with sour cream) comfort food. But because she loved coffee, there was something special about sitting at the end of the evening listening to her reminisce her life and have her listen to your days with her classic advise which was always so appropriate. She will be missed and she was definitely loved. Nana Chole got to spend time and lived with all her children from time to time. Her memories will live on in generations to come as my mother taught me her values as I taught my son, Martin. I am attaching two special photos. So sorry for your loss, What a wonderful thing to live that many years and have such a loving family, I know that she must have loved life it's self to be able to reach 114yrs young that in it's self is something that we all wish we could accomplish, I'm wondering how many family members she has and wow the stories that she was able to tell them all about her 114yrs that she was on this earth, Hopefully there are stories that I would love to hear, Just to think how her life was when she was a child that is what makes here such a special person to have been able to see generations come and go some of us only dream of that but she lived it, That is something that some of us will never be able to do.
