Lynn DeBruin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 7, 2013.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Lynn DeBruin, who worked for The Associated Press covering sports since 2010 and had been a writer with the Rocky Mountain News and the East Valley Tribune, has died. She was 51.

DeBruin died in a Denver hospice early Saturday, said her sister, Linda Luther-Veno, who was present along with friends. DeBruin had been battling cancer.

DeBruin joined the AP in 2010 to cover the Jazz, college athletics and winter sports in Utah. She reported on the surprise resignation of Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan in 2011 after 1,127 wins. She was the lead reporter for the AP when Brigham Young University made its run to the Sweet 16 behind rising star Jimmer Fredette.

Her professional career also included coverage of the World Series, six Super Bowls and golf's majors. She spent 10 years as an NFL beat writer, first in Arizona, then with the Broncos for John Elway's final Super Bowl.

"Lynn was a tenacious journalist who made us all strive to be better, especially as she fought with such courage and strength over the past several months," said Lou Ferrara, AP's managing editor for sports and entertainment. "Our thoughts are with her family and her many friends and colleagues."

Luther-Veno said DeBruin's passions included travel and photography. She also was an avid golfer.

Luther-Veno said memorial services will be held in Denver and in DeBruin's native Pennsylvania.

Along with Luther-Veno, DeBruin is survived by her mother, Mary Luther, and a brother, Stephen Luther.

My since condolences to you Linda and family. As its been years since I have seen Lynn it was so great to reconnect with her a couple years ago. She had a incredible passion for life and She truly lived her dream. I will always cherish those years in middle school where we played golf and hit our first golf balls together. My condolences to the DeBruin family on the passing of Lynn. May the comfort only God can bring brings you strength and peace of mind. Death is such an unwelcome guest. Isaiah 40:29 Says, "He is giving to the tired one power and the one without dynamic energy he makes full might abound." He is a helper for us in time of need.

Sincere and heart-felt condolences from me to your family in this most difficult time.

I didn't know Lynn well, but covered University of Utah athletics alongside her since her arrival in Utah.

As a talented, accomplished and established female sports writer, Lynn was someone whom I admired, and tried to emulate. I watched, studied and learned from her as I embarked on my fledgling career. Lynn informally became something of a mentor, and encouraged me to continue my career in sports journalism.

Over time, we began to know each better and formed an all-too-short friendship.

As Lynn confided her private struggle with cancer, my respect and awe for her grew exponentially.

I was shocked to hear that she had so gracefully battled her terrible disease for so long. All the while, no one was the wiser, and Lynn continued to be the consummate professional that she always was.

Aside from her tremendous writing talent, I will remember Lynn as a kind-hearted, passionate and vibrant spirit who loved a good laugh with a close friend over a drink.

I'll remember her words of encouragement (without which I would be in a different career now) and her willingness to listen. More than all of that, I'll always remember, and draw upon the inspiration I got from watching the quiet courage and calm, but steely resolve to not only fight her disease, but to live a positive and high-quality life simultaneously.

Her attitude toward her battle is something I shall never forget, and hope to apply to my own life struggles.

I could only aspire to do so with the courage, strength and grace that Lynn displayed.

I'm sad to say that it was one more priceless lesson I took from knowing her, and gave so little in return.

I'll be forever touched by my short association with her, and a little piece of Lynn will be present in every story I will ever write as her gentle, and constructive criticism accelerated my learning curve.

Other than to face life and its requisite adversity head on, but with a smile on my face and a laugh on my lips, my continued work in her chosen field is the best way I know to honor, and remember her.

Rest in Peace, Lynn. Peace be with your family and friends in your absence.

I sincerely offer my condolence. Lynn's death has no doubt cast a shadow over you as you go about your daily life because death brings us face-to-face with the fact that she is gone too soon. Her presence will be dearly missed. So despite the pain of grief, let it be your resolve to work your way through pain and grief. The rich life that she led has left many memories. Jesus said: "Do not let your heart be troubled." Remember: God can help you to endure any and every problem they may face. He will give you the "power beyond what is normal" to go from one day to the next. (2Corinthians 4:7)

To Lynn's family and friends, I was a sportswriter whose path crossed Lynn's several times at golf courses over the years. We talked many times about cancer and the fight against it and she showed when my wife lost her battle at age 50. Quite a lady Lynn was. May she now rest in peace even though we'll miss her. To the DeBruin Family,

As long as you remember me
My memory will live on.
Our thoughts will be there with you
And at every breaking dawn good thoughts of us will fill your mind of us as time lessons your pain.
You will here finally be able to hear the birds sing in spring and remember me each day with a smile.
Have comfort in knowing That I'm at peace now.
As long as you remember me,
The love you have will fill your heart, and it will ease the sorrow
For we will only be apart for a while.
So have good thoughts of me,
See and enjoy the wonder of each day, the joy of sunlit on your face and the afternoons sunsets.
The grand design displays everything that God has given us to enjoy.
As long as you remember me,
The memories of us will always be their
God can help give you that tranquility
As nighttime stars appear just ask him
to give you hope for brighter days
and strengthen you to see remember he can only put on you what you can bear, and he will never leave you and with Gods help he will be an added comforted just remember to have FAITH it will subtain you Ps.147;3
