I became friends with John at the old Shanty. John was a man who was down to earth, honest, and a friend always. I remember how he'd ask for my help to tote food for NFL Alumni meetings, which to me were fun to observe.
To ride on the Anheuser-Busch bus to collect former players gathering during the first Tampa Super Bowl week, well, just exciting.
And for many trips back to Tampa over the years, I could always count on finding John.
I sure as hell am gonna miss ya!

John was a friend to all. He was kind to everyone he met, so you didn't have to know him well to consider him a friend. Everyone liked him and he was the classic definition of a gentle giant. My three children often played golf at The Babe ( golf course) with some of their friends and then again when they played golf for Chamberlain High School. John worked there at the time and always took the time to talk with them. I am thankful that I got the opportunity to know him and I am glad my children did too. Too all his family, I send my condolences. Brian Code
