Vern Mikkelsen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 22, 2013.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Vern Mikkelsen, a Hall of Fame basketball player who won four NBA titles with the Minneapolis Lakers, has died. He was 85.

Mikkelsen died on Thursday night surrounded by family, the Los Angeles Lakers announced on Friday. He was a six-time All-Star during 10 years with the Lakers, teaming with George Mikan and Jim Pollard in a frontcourt that to this day is considered one of the best the league has ever seen.

Though he was known for his hard-nosed defense, Mikkelsen averaged 14.4 points and 9.4 rebounds in his career and emerged as one of the first true power forwards in the league. He was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1995.

"I was a good basketball player, but I attribute greatness to those individuals who sacrifice their time, talents, and efforts for the benefit of others," Mikkelsen wrote in the forward to "The Vern Mikkelsen Story," which was published in 2006. "I did some of that, too, though not nearly as much as I would have liked to, looking back on it."

Arild Verner Mikkelson was born in Fresno, Calif., in 1928 and grew up in the northern Minnesota town of Askov, about 95 miles north of Minneapolis. He played college ball at Hamline in St. Paul, at the time a basketball power that sent two other players to the Lakers as well. Mikkelsen was drafted in 1949 and helped lead the Lakers to championships in 1950 and three in a row from 1952-54.

Mikkelsen was a physical player and fouled out a record 127 times before retiring in 1959. He was later the coach and general manager of the ABA's Minnesota Pipers.

"Vern was one of the first in a long line of great Lakers players, and a key link to our franchise's early years in Minnesota," Lakers President Jeanie Buss said in a statement. "We appreciate his contributions to the Lakers and our legacy, and we send our condolences and best wishes to his family."

Mikkelsen's name hangs in the rafters at Staples Center on a banner that also is home to the retired jerseys in the organization. Mikkelsen remained a revered figure in Minnesota long after his playing days, a gracious story teller who remained close to the game long after he retired.

In his later years, Mikkelsen overcame two strokes, diabetes, prostate cancer and the death of his wife of 47 years in 2002. And he remained upbeat through it all.

"Keep on doing your best with what you have to work with, as we all have an obligation to take care of ourselves and live as long as possible, respecting each day as a great gift with the intention of sharing the simple, meaningful things of life with family, friends and our community," Mikkelsen wrote.

He was influential in bringing the NBA back to Minnesota in the 1980s and the Timberwolves planned to hold a moment of silence to honor him on Friday night before they played the Brooklyn Nets.

"During his playing days at Hamline University and the Lakers, Vern was a dominant force on the court and one of the game's great power forwards," the Wolves said in a statement. "Vern was a great friend to our organization and we offer our condolences to his family."

My condolences to all of you. I had the pleasure of meeting your dad on many occasions when the Hamline Pipers would get together. My dad (Ken Thompson) played with him and is devastated to have lost another former teammate. Peace be with you.

as a Laker fan I was saddened to hear of the passing of one of the greats of the early Laker teams Vern Mikkelsen unfortunately I never saw him play in person, just in newsreels highlights. I know that George Mikan and Jim Pollard also were sparks on the team as well. now they are reunited again and playing for an even greater coach now. may the god of love send his peace and comfort to Vern's family at this time of sadness. rest in peace #19 and thanks for your great career

Condolences go to the Mikklesen family. I was fortunate to watch Vern along with George Mikan and Jim Pollard play at the old Chicago Stadium against the Chicago Stags whom the defeated. Mikan had 36 points (a feat at that time). It was very exciting and memorable. Donn Loeffler from Kenosha Wiscoonsin.

John and Tom, It was indeed a gift in my life when I got to work with your Dad in the fund raising efforts for the Hutton Fieldhouse at Hamline several years ago. From that time forward he always included me in the regular game/lunch/gatherings of his group of Hamline players from years gone by. Just sitting back and listening to the old stories, legends, lore and bantering was indeed a treat! I was truly Blessed to know this consummate gentlemen. He will always be in my heart. My prayers to you during the days that lie ahead.

Though I never met Mr. Nikkelsen, I love this man; not only because he was such a great basketball player but also because he had such great appreciation for the gift of life and knew how to find some positiveness in whatever obstacle he faced. A great man and a great ball player who will be dearly missed! I am so sorry for your loss. As you reminisce over the good times that you shared with him, remember to draw close to God for comfort and he will respond Abundantly to your request.

I'm saddened by your family's loss. Ben was my hero from the Lakers when I was a little kid in 1954 & 1955. One of my prized possessions is his autograph which is still in my possession. One of my greatest was when he was walking off the court he put his arm around my shoulder after a rough game. He had class and he had always been in my thoughts when I think Lakers. Please accept my sympathy and he no doubt well have eternal life. Warm condolences to his entire family.

John & Tom,
I am very sorry to hear that your Dad, Vern, has passed away. I had the priviledge of meeting him at numerous occasions when I accompanied my Dad, Tommy Thomsen from Askov Minnesota. We attended a few basketball functions honoring your Dad and I remember how proud my Dad was to be a part of Vern's past. They played basketball together in Askov and many memories were shared by both. Vern was a wonderful man and will be missed by many. My sympathies go out to you and your family.
