Herb Kirsh Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 29, 2014.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Former South Carolina Rep. Herb Kirsh, the longest-serving House member when he left office in 2010, has died. He was 84.

M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home in Clover confirms that Kirsh died Tuesday evening at a hospital in Gaston County, N.C.

The Democrat served 32 years in the House before losing a re-election bid in 2010. A Ways and Means Committee member, Kirsh was known as a fiscal conservative. Colleagues of both parties relied on his knowledge of the budget. He was previously mayor of Clover.

Kevin Kirsh told The Herald of Rock Hill (http://bit.ly/1bwVL2h ) that his father had been hospitalized Saturday after doctors found blood clots in his legs. He had been in hospitals and rehabilitation centers since a series of falls in December.

I hope somebody sees this. I have a very old fur coat that belonged to Herb's mother, Yetta. Her name is sewn in on the inside of the mink wrap/shawl. Would love to connect with somebody in the family! [email protected]

My deepest sympathy goes to the Kirsh family. The most honorable was Herbert Kirsh will be missed. He was a kind, and generous man. As a child, I remember shopping with my mother at the Kirsh Department Store . You didn't get to buy new shoes unless you went to Kirsh's. That's was a quality product! He always had a smile on his face. If he felt some problem you were having would be solved with a phone call or letter. It was the right thing to do , he was behind you 100%. I am blessed to have known him.

My deepest sympathy goes to the Kirsh family. The most honorable Herbert Kirsh was a phenomenal man...kind, generous, and personable. I will always be grateful for the letter of recommendation he wrote for me 30 years ago. It helped me get into MUSC Dental School. I remember spotting a beautiful khaki coat at Kirsh Department Store in 1981. I asked my mother, Mary Frances Jackson (Clover resident), to purchase it for me. I wore that coat throughout college (USC) and years thereafter. My daughter,Aja,26 years-old, wears it now. That's quality product!! So was Mr. Kirsh. Clover, South Carolina, and the world has lost an icon, one of the highest quality individuals we will ever know. I am blessed to have known him.

I interviewed Sen. Kirsh on WAVO 1150 about 18 years. He was easy to interview and I could see that he cared about the people of SC. We may have been strangers when we met, but we were friends when he left the radio station. I'm honored to have had that opportunity. My deepest sympathy goes out to his family.

With deepest sympathy to the Kirsh Family.

There is nothing better in life than to do good to your fellowman, and that is exactly what Mr. Hirsh has done. And yet there is no doubt he was still the best family man as well. So may your hearts be strengthened by the God who hears our prayers (Psalm 83:18, Psalm 65:2). And may you always cherish the many wonderful and precious memories of times spent with Mr. Herb.

I can only echo the sentiments expressed in the news article by my former colleague, John Monk of The State newspaper. Mr. Kirsh was a gracious, fair-minded gentleman who set a fine example of what a public servant should be. I value having had the experience of reporting about him during my career as a journalist.

I always enjoyed working with Mr. Kirsh. If he told you how he was going to vote on an issue,he did exactly that. A honest man who provided much to the state of SC. You couldn't hide anything in the budget, because he would find it. A true gentlemen. My thoughts and prayer's go out to his family.

Herb was a dedicated public servant and probably the most fiscally conservative member to serve in the SC House of Representatives. His integrity was above question. I enjoyed serving with him on the Ways and Means Committee and how 'safe the state' was in Herb's hands. Pleasant passage, my friend.
