Milo Hamilton Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 17, 2015.
HOUSTON (AP) - Milo Hamilton, a Hall of Fame broadcaster who called Hank Aaron's historic 715th home run in 1974, has died.

The Houston Astros announced the death of their longtime play-by-play man on Thursday. He was 88. A cause of death was not immediately released.

Hamilton spent 60 years broadcasting MLB games, and was working for WSB Radio in Atlanta when Aaron became the all-time home run leader on April 8, 1974. Hamilton later said it was the highlight of his career.

Hamilton joined the Astros in 1985 and retired following the 2012 season. Hamilton since 2013 served as a guest radio commentator for select home games.

Astros president of business operations Reid Ryan says Hamilton was a "true icon" whose contributions to the game and beyond will be remembered always.

My heart is broken. I listened to Milo on the radio from when I was a child until I was a grandmother. He was my connection to the baseball world before cable TV and such a big part of my life. May he rest in peace in the arms of Jesus.

Mark,

I'm a bit tardy with my condolences, but want you to know that I am still thinking about you, Katie and Milo. I was struck by one of the many online tributes where Milo was being interviewed and made the statement to the effect that, "Once a good friend, always a good friend and you don't forget good friends!" If there was ever a person who lived by that code, it was Milo Hamilton. As you may recall, after my parents were married, their first apartment here in Fairfield was across the street from Milo's family home. Milo was a freshman at Fairfield High School. I'll always remember him telling me that when he saw my folks, he thought they were a couple of movie stars moving in across the street. He loved my folks and they loved Milo! Milo would always gather my folks and all his great Fairfield friends each time he came to Fairfield. I always thought we should take him to dinner, but oh, no, Milo insisted on picking up the tab. As "the kid", I was so lucky to have been included in that group and to hear all the stories. What is so special to me is that when my dad was ill and passed in February 2014, Milo called me at least a dozen times to check on Mom and then called several times after Mom passed this past March to check on me. I know how busy he was, even in retirement, but he never forgot a good friend! I'll bet we talked for an hour and a half on that last call. We talked about hunting quail, growing up in Fairfield and various friends and family, the Hawkeyes, Astros, and on and on! As you said, Mark, cherish those conversations! And do I ever!!! He never forgot any good friend, no matter how busy he was! I will miss very much hearing my cell ring and seeing his number pop up with his booming voice on the other end, "Is this the Fairfield Flash?!?!" followed by totally enjoyable conversations! It always makes me smile!

Fairfield, Houston and the world lost a dear friend with a huge and caring heart, generous with is time and money and a guy, who I might add, was incredibly fun and funny! We're all going to miss you very much, Milo! TG (Fairfield, Iowa)

My love for baseball was fostered by the play-by-play voices who made it real, and Milo was the best. Years later, I was thrilled to meet him for dinner at the Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee--the first of many meals we would share over the next decade. It was a pleasure to call him a friend, and he will forever be a legendary Hawkeye. On Iowa! Go Astros! Jeff Liebermann, Iowa City IA

As a child playing out under the street light, I can remember hearing Milo's voice coming through the screen window as daddy relaxed listening to the Houston Astros.
Never would I have dreamed that later as a grown woman coming to work for a radio station that I would have the opportunity to know you.
Words cannot describe the admiration and respect I have for you. I will dearly miss you coming into the lobby and saying to me "Hey Kid, how are you".
Rest in Peace my dearest friend.

I'm very fortunate to have the opportunity to meet a lot of great people. It's so rare that one of those people I can actually call a friend. Milo Hamilton was not only an idol of mine growing up, but a role model for me early in my radio career, that developed into a cherished friendship. My heart, along with the City of Houston's heart, is heavy. Rest In Peace Leland Milo Hamilton. I know Arlene and Patricia are happy to have you now. You will be very missed here.

Mr. Hamilton was so nice to me when I was in high school and played baseball with his son Mark. Whether at their home or in the booth he was always welcoming. More than Milo the announcer, I knew him as Mark's dad and he was a Hall of Famer at that as well.

What an amazing career Milo enjoyed. As a baseball fan from the Braves' 1966 entrance into ATL, I was like thousands--hooked on Milo's voice and the game pictures his voice painted. Around that 1974 'infamous Hank Aaron call', I was working part-time for Milo and the booth crew, answering their fan mail. What an experience. His manager, John Anderson, who hired me for that fun job, passed away earlier this Summer. I hope they're reliving their favorite games, together again.

Even though I lived in Ohio as I boy, I became an immediate Houston Colt 45s fan when they came in to the NL in 1962. When I later moved to Austin for my PhD program, I finally got to live near and attend games of my beloved Astros, and got to listen to the great baseball narratives of Milo, and with the birth of digital media and MLB's audio and radio software, I was able to listen to him every night over the years, especially through the the great 2005 World Series season. My son Justin was born in Texas and has been a lifelong fan, endearing to the Astros through Milo's poignant storytelling and baseball tradition. I am so sad to learn that he will never provide me another broadcast, but I like to think he is in heaven talking to the great baseball players of all time and charming his listeners on its golden shores.

Milo was an honest and proud man who never gave less than 100% to his work or his countless friendships. I have known him for 32 years and remember how he and wife, Arleen and son, Mark, treated me from the moment I first met them.

His most famous call of Hank Aaron's 715th HR is quickly cited and it is wonderful. But, separate from that great and distinguished masterpiece, Milo was highly accomplished -overall- with 31 years of baseball announcing before he arrived in Houston. That his "added" 28 years with the Astros became the greatest achievement of his career was truly heartening; he found a real home and team-as-family. That was all he ever wanted.

Rest in Peace, friend, mentor, Hall of Famer, philanthropist and contributor to the fabric of Texas and the United States.

Please allow me to extend my deepest heartfelt condolences to Mr. Hamilton's son, family and close friends. Our paths crossed many times over a twenty-year period in Houston, TX (between 1985 and 2005 at baseball-related events), and in Kissimmee, FL. "Mr. H" (as I fondly called him) was certainly a great broadcaster and emcee, but an even greater human being in my book. A little over twenty years ago, a dear cousin of mine in Louisiana contracted leukemia. I was aware of Mr. H's own battle with that disease, so I contacted him to request he consider giving her a call. Before I could even get to that point, Mr. H requested her phone number, and he called her that same day. Fortunately, she was later able to get a bone marrow transplant, and is doing well to this day. In my book, that tells you what kind of person Mr. H was, and neither my cousin or I will ever forget that kindness. Thanks for ALL the good things you did, Milo. Rest in peace, my friend....
