Grace Lee Boggs Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 6, 2015.
DETROIT (AP) - Grace Lee Boggs, known as an international activist for justice, has died at her Detroit home. She was 100.

President Barack Obama released a statement, saying Boggs learned "the world needed changing, and she overcame barriers to do just that."

Her death Monday was announced by the Boggs Center to Nurture Community Leadership.

Boggs and late husband James Boggs were involved in many causes, from civil rights to income equality. She helped organized a 1963 march in Detroit by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

The daughter of Chinese immigrants, Boggs was born in Rhode Island and grew up in New York City. She moved to Detroit in the 1950s to write for a socialist newspaper. A 2013 documentary, "American Revolutionary: The Evolution of Grace Lee Boggs," aired on PBS.

A name is better than good oil, and the day of death than the day of one's being born." Grace Lee Boggs certainly made a good name for herself. The life she lived will be cherished by those whose lives she touched, and she will be greatly missed.

You didn't know me personally, but you recognized me and acknowledged me every time you saw me which was infrequent over the years. You would smile with recognition and I would say ''I'm -------'s sister and you would smile and include me in the conversation. I felt proud and honored to be in a conversation with you, as opposed to having an audience with you. I always took a gem of wisdom and enlightenment with me upon leaving. Goodbye,Grace. I fear and become sad, tearful as I think we'll never see the likes of you again.

Grace and Jimmy were my parents in activism. They taught me strategies , when and how to march and even how to prioritize events. Any accolades I've received for marching on crack houses must be credited directly to the teaching of Grace and Jimmy Boggs. We have lost arguably to greatest community organizer of our time.

Mrs Boggs determination for equal rights is impressive and she made her mark in American history. We all look forward to a time when we will see our fellow man the same way God does, with no partiality. Until that time may she rest in peace in Gods memory.

We express our condolences to the Boggs family, many friends and colleagues . Creativity with vision is a gift that should be enjoyed forever. Love for what is right and fair for all - is Godly. May you find comfort in your many fond memories together, God's promise to undo all tragedy and the inspiring words of a wise man of long ago: Acts 10:34,35 - Now I truly understand that God is not partial,+ 35 but in every nation the man who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.+"
