John Ciarcia Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 2, 2015.
John "Cha-Cha" Ciarcia, a tough-guy actor on "The Sopranos" who also owned a popular restaurant in New York City's Little Italy neighborhood that his celebrity friends frequented, has died. He was 75.

No cause of death was announced, but Ciarcia died Nov. 21 after a brief illness at New York University's Langone Medical Center, according to relatives who published his obituary in The New York Times.

Ciarcia, who decades ago served as actor Tony Danza’s boxing manager, was actor Danny DeVito's best man at his wedding to fellow actor Rhea Perlman in 1982.

Ciarcia, a native of Manhattan, New York, owned Little Italy's Cha-Cha's in Bocca al Lupo Cafe on Mulberry Street.

Also known as the Mayor of Little Italy, Ciarcia enjoyed hosting celebrity friends including not only Danza, DeVito and Perlman, but also the motion picture director Martin Scorsese and actors Robert DeNiro and Danny Aiello.

Ciarcia's movies included "Hoffa," "A Brooklyn State of Mind," "Mamamia," "Death to Smoochy" and "Goodfellas."

He played Albie Cianfione on HBO's "The Sopranos," and he co-hosted "The Wise Guys Show" on Sirius-XM satellite radio.

He is survived by his wife, the singer Karen King; a sister, Marie Gentile; four aunts; an uncle; and many nieces and nephews.

I am sorry to learn of the passing of Cha Cha. In July 2015, I was visiting NYC and I stopped by Cha Cha's because it was one of the places on Mulberry Street that did not have a staff person in front hawking the establishment. I had a nice glass of Cha Cha's wine, then met Karen and we had a good chat. She told me the person sitting in front was Cha Cha, and I knew I had chosen the right place to stop by, as he was very relaxed and personable talking with various people. My deepest condolences to the Ciarcia family,

I loved ChaCha. I will never forget New Years Eve on Mulberry Street many years ago when he lit off a bunch of fireworks and "beat" Chinatown with the better show. Joey DePinto was there. Great memories. There was a picture of me on the wall back in the day.

I would like to offer my deepest condolences for your loss. I knew John for almost 65 years, we both attended PS 130 and Haaren High School together. Some of the things that he, and I did in those two schools would get your butt out on the street today. Then we both reported to the Draft Board on the same day, to this day I still laugh when I think of some of the things he did on that day.

My finest memory of Cha Cha was dining with him in Paris. We met at a very posh hotel and in walks Cha Cha in his large Beever coat, sweat pants and a NY Yankees ( or was it Mets) baseball cap, making fun of the. French! We went to a lovely restaurant and Cha Cha spotted famed French designer Jean Paul Gaultier and he said, " Hey, there. 's fancy pants.". He always made me laugh. Keep making us laugh Cha Cha, rest in peace.
