Violette Verdy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 9, 2016.
Ballet legend Violette Verdy died Monday in Bloomington, Indiana, at 82, according to multiple news sources.

Verdy was the principal dancer for the New York City Ballet for two decades. She was the first woman to be artistic director of the Paris Opera Ballet and was then the artistic director of the Boston Ballet.

Verdy began dancing in 1939 as a 6-year-old. She continued to perform through 1977. She performed with more than 50 companies and in more than 100 ballets including classics such as "Swan Lake," "The Sleeping Beauty," "Romeo and Juliet" and "Cinderella."

She also appeared on screen in the movie "The Glass Slipper" in 1955.

Verdy joined the ballet faculty at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University in 1996. She continued to teach there until her death.

Gwyn Richards, Jacobs School of Music dean, said students admired her.

"The kids would look to her with such reverence, such appreciation that this seminal figure in this field was in their midst and that they just had a chance to be taught by her," Richards said. "She was the muse for (George) Balanchine, and they (the students) then had a direct line to someone like Balanchine."

Though death can steal your loved one, it can never steal your love, it lives in your hearts, and it lives in your memories. May you hold fast those memories and they will help you to deal with this great loss. Life is so short and those we love are gone from our lives too quickly. May the God of loyal love comfort you during your time of sorrow. My sincere condolences on your loss.

Ms. Verdy was an inspiration to the numerous students that studied under her at School of American Ballet, including me.
Her mother, Madame took us into her home while we intensively learned our art. In the classroom and in her mother's home, she was kind and genuine. I was in awe of her.
I have built a ballet school, and I often share my experiences living with Madame and knowing Violette with my students. They helped shape my life.
To her family, I am sad for your loss. May she rest in peace. ~J
