L.C. Ulmer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 17, 2016.
L.C. Ulmer, a Mississippi musician who appeared in a documentary film about the birthplace of the blues, has died, according to multiple news sources. He was 87.

Ulmer, whom relatives found unconscious at his home in Ellisville, Mississippi, died Sunday of natural causes, though the Jones County medical examiner told the Hattiesburg American that the death remains under investigation.

Born Lee Chester Ulmer Aug. 28, 1928, in Stringer, Mississippi, he was a regular on the blues music circuit. In June 2008, for example, he performed in Chicago's Grant Park on the Mississippi Juke Joint Stage at the 25th annual Chicago Blues Festival. That same year, he was featured in the documentary film "M for Mississippi: A Road Trip Through the Birthplace of the Blues."

In 2011, he released his one and only album, "Blues Come Yonder," on the Hill Country Records label that included 11 of his own songs and a cover of Hank Williams' "I Saw the Light."

Ulmer was a multi-instrumentalist, playing not only guitar, but also banjo, mandolin, violin, drums, keyboards and harmonica. During his career, he met famous musicians including Elvis Presley, Nat King Cole, Muddy Waters and Fats Domino.

In 2009, the Mississippi Delta Blues Society honored Ulmer as its blues artist of the year.

Please accept my condolences on the passing of Mr. L.C. It was an honor to have known such a great blues musician. His shared talent and inspirational/motivational speeches were well received by the art students at Coahoma Community College, Clarksdale, MS. His performances during the Juke Joint Festivals were "blues best". Sincere condolences.
