Victoria McGrath Obituary
The deaths of Victoria McGrath and fellow student Priscilla Perez Torres were confirmed Monday by McGrath's mother and Northeastern University in Boston.
"We are stunned, shocked and heartbroken," Jill McGrath wrote in an email to NBC News.
A statement from Northeastern University said, "Victoria and Priscilla were vibrant, beloved members of our community, and their passing leaves a grievous absence in our community and in our hearts," the university said. "Each were kind, talented young women, with exceptional futures before them."
McGrath became a symbol of the Boston Marathon tragedy when a photo of her being carried to safety by a Boston firefighter was seen on the internet around the globe.
She was standing only a few feet away from where the first bomb exploded on April 15, 2013 at the finish line. A piece of shrapnel entered one of her legs and sent her down to the ground in pain. She suffered nerve damage and spent weeks recovering.
Jimmy Plourde, the firefighter who carried her to safety that day said in a statement that he and his family were "devastated" to hear the news. He also wrote, "It's been said that I helped to save her life, but the truth is Victoria saved my life after the marathon as her love, support and friendship helped myself and my family deal with the acts of 4/15/13,"
Torres was from Guaynabo, Puerto Rico and was "passionate about travel and working on issues related to nutrition and women's health," the university said. "Victoria and Priscilla touched many of our lives, and we will miss them terribly."

I had the pleasure to first meet Victoria with her mom a co-worker in NYC, right before she would head off to North Eastern for her first year, My Niece was also attending as a freshman. Jill her Mom is a kind soul, and I count her as a friend. I was very struck by the depth of love they shared as they bantered about their days and caught up with each other. They clearly were the pea and the pod. The bombing I witnessed a mothers love, tragic, scary but amazing. I ran into Jill in Ireland and had pleasure to introduce her to my daughter, who she new well from parents sharing things about there kids. Sweet as can be to my daughter she caught me up on how great Victoria was doing and her excitement was in voice and eyes. My 11 year old even commented about her. So this news just stunned me for all the reasons it should, but with reflection, what a life and what a family. While not yet having the pleasure to meet Jim her dad, studies show confidence, strength come from the father, right or wrong clearly Victoria had it and than sum. I'm deeply sorry for both your losses, but wow you two parented good, every moment you had her, You always will, that light burns even in those that knew your special child for only a meeting. My prays go up.
