Morley Safer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 19, 2016.
Morley Safer, the veteran CBS journalist and correspondent for the network's "60 Minutes," died May 19, according to CBS. He was 84.

No cause of death was immediately available, and no other details were provided.

Safer was born Nov. 8, 1931, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He started his journalism career as a print reporter for a number of newspapers in Canada and England. He also became a correspondent and producer for the Canadian Broadcasting Corp.

He joined CBS News in 1964, based initially in London, England. A year later, he was assigned to open a news bureau in Saigon. He was soon covering the Vietnam War. By 1967, Safer was back in London as CBS’ bureau chief.

In 1970, Harry Reasoner, one of the original “60 Minutes” correspondents, quit CBS to become the news anchor for another network. Safer was tapped for Reasoner’s “60 Minutes” beat, where he flourished. He retired from “60 Minutes” in March of this year, making him the program’s longest-serving correspondent.

In a post on the show’s official Facebook page, “60 Minutes” said Safer “was a master storyteller, a gentleman and a wonderful friend. We miss him.”

ABC News also paid tribute to Safer in a Facebook post.

“Condolences to our friends at CBS News on the passing of legendary 60 Minutes correspondent Morley Safer who died today at age 84,” the network wrote.

i had the pleasure of meeting morley in the mid 90's when he came to a tree farm that i worked at in lebanon, ct. he wanted some privet bushes for his home in chester. he arrived with a dark green chevy truck and a custom made cap on the back. it was tan canvas, almost like a wooden wagon would have in little house on the prarie. he said he had it made at an awning shop. i sat on his tailgate, smoked one of his cigarettes and thought to myself, "how neat to meet the man i heard every sunday night growing up from my bedroom and early bedtime." very neat down to earth human being. kevin maines storrs, ct.

Morley Safer as well as the 60 Minutes original men were like a 'staple' in our house when I was growing up. Now that I'm married over 30 years, it's continued in my home every Sunday night, unless it was football season or March Madness, then you had trouble zeroing in on its take off. Mr. Safer told us what was going on in Vietnam when not much was coming from our enlisted family or news. Thank you, Morley, for always tickling my interest; gosh, you'll be missed. God Bless him and his family who has been left behind. And on Sunday nights, when I hear that ticking of the clock, I will always remember the men who forged through many a storm to bring us the story. Thank you, Mr. Safer, job well done. Tonight, God will have good company when we hear the ticking.

Having just seen and enjoyed the 60 Minutes retirement tribute to Mr. Safer on Sunday, I was totally surprised and shocked to learn that he had passed away, within days, on Thursday. What a remarkable man and life! I well remember him, first and foremost, on the evening news reporting from the field in Viet Nam. I would have to say Mr. Safer was just as brave as he was an incredible journalist. Truly an amazing life and career. My heartfelt condolences to his family with prayers that God will comfort you in your time of grief. Also, may the special thoughts and remembrances from Mr. Safer's viewers remind you of the numerous friends he gleaned in this world during his evening TV visits into our living rooms.

So pleased to say I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Safer in what seems a lifetime ago when he came to Miami University in Oxford, OH. He stayed at the guest lodge attached to the building where I worked. He kindly checked in with me and kindly signed an autograph. Enjoyed a coffee hour with a small group of folks following his major talk. A very interesting and generous man. What a career and life! To his family and friends, you have my deepest and most heartfelt sympathy!
