Josaphat phoned his mother from the club's bathroom when the shooting began. She dialed 911 on another phone while remaining on the line with her son, but she was unable to learn of his fate until the following day. Josaphat's aunt described him: "He was always helpful, always willing to help someone in need."

Jason, you was one of the best, honest, truthful classmate and the best friend anyone can have at Southern Technical College. I was in shock when I heard you departed from us, it broke my heart in thousands pieces but I know you don't want us to cry for but instead be happy that you're in a much better place than us and that you will always watch over those that you love and those that loves you much more. I remember when I wanted to quit school because of the course but you had told me that we were not born to be a quitter but as a fighter. You gave me the strength to move forward and continue with my dreams and to achieve my goals. I give all my thanks to you because now I have 2 months left in school. I went to see you and to say my good byes, but it's not a good bye, it's a I see you soon or later. May you R.I.P. my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family, you will be missed but never forgotten.
