Joel Cornette Obituary
The office said Cornette was found dead at 1:02 a.m. Tuesday. It also said an autopsy was pending.
Butler University officials issued a news statement: "This morning, we spoke with the Cornette family, who has confirmed that their beloved son and brother, Joel, passed away early this morning due to natural causes. They are shocked and devastated by this news. The Butler family also mourns the loss of one of our favorite Bulldogs. Additional information will be released by the Cornette family as it becomes available. Please join us in keeping the Cornette family in your thoughts and prayers."
Cornette, who scored more than 1,000 points in four seasons, helped Butler become one of the country's perennial NCAA Tournament team. In 2003, he helped the Bulldogs make the tournament's Sweet 16 -- a first in 41 years. Cornette had more than 700 rebounds during his collegiate career.

Cornette is the second prominent former Butler basketball player to die at a young age within the last seven months. Andrew Smith, Butler's star center and one of the main players on two teams that went to the national championship game, died Jan. 12 of cancer, according to ESPN. He was 25.

My heart hurts for the Cornette family. Joel was very special to me and touched my heart the minute I met him. I've only known him for six years, but feel like I've known him a lifetime and knew he would be a part of my life forever.

I spoke with Joel once pregame at Hinkle as he was about to play his 2PM opponent. After introducing ourselves, we shared a laugh, it was a most impressionable meeting, and, going forward, I followed Joel's career. Joel made my day that day at our beloved Hinkle. I am very sad but know Joel is with Our Lord. Romans 8: 37-39

I never met Joel or your family but I feel like I know you all. I worked at Chase in Columbus with Joyce Cornette when Joel was playing at Butler & Jordan at Notre Dame. She was so proud of those boys & we all became their fans because we loved Joyce so much & thought so much of her. You have been in my prayers since I heard the devestating news. My heart aches and am in so much pain hearing of his passing. I still can't believe this is true! Joel had such a beautiful soul filled with so much love and compassion. He taught me so much about life and helped me to understand the true definition of love. The time I was able to spend with him and the memories we made together I will forever hold close to my heart. Joel was truly something very special to me and feel such a great loss. My condolences to the entire Cornette family and all of his extended family that he called friends.
