Arnold Palmer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 25, 2016.
Arnold Palmer, one of the American legends of professional golf, died Sunday, Sept. 25, 2016, in Pittsburgh, according to multiple news sources. He was 87.

Palmer won 62 titles on the PGA Tour between 1955 and 1973. Part of the “Big Three” alongside Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player, he helped popularize and commercialize professional golf as a televised sport.

Born Sept. 10, 1929, in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, Palmer learned the game from his father, Milfred "Deacon" Palmer, who was head professional and greenskeeper at Latrobe Country Club. He attended Wake Forest on a golf scholarship, but he served in the U.S. Coast Guard for three years before beginning to play full time. His win in the 1954 U.S. Amateur paved the way for his entry into professional golf.

Palmer’s first tour win was the 1955 Canadian Open during his rookie season. By 1960, he had won the Masters Tournament – twice – and was named Sports Illustrated magazine’s Sportsman of the Year. His fans, known as Arnie’s Army, showed up in droves to watch their hero and his aggressive, emotional style of golf.

Palmer played golf like it was a full-contact sport, attacking the course like an opponent and swinging full-bore at the ball. Over the years, sports writers called his style bold, hard-charging, go-for-broke; they said it was full of panache and charisma. It was an unforgettable style that attracted fans who might not have bothered with the sport had they never seen Palmer drive his way to another dominating win.

Palmer's rise to superstardom wasn't hurt by his friendly good looks and folksy charm. In a sport often seen as elitist, Palmer was one of the first to bring a common man's touch to the green, attracting fans who loved dreaming that they, too, might rise to Palmer's heights. He wasn't born with a silver spoon in his mouth – he learned at the knee of his dad, but not in an exclusive venue. Latrobe was a modest club, and Deacon Palmer was a self-made man who worked his way up from a groundskeeping job to the status of head pro. It was skill and drive that got Palmer to the top, not money and connections, and his fans loved it.

With his bold style, handsome face, and charismatic personality, Palmer was made to be a television star, and that combination of attributes – unusual in the midcentury golf world – helped to make golf a viable TV sport. In the mid-1950s, few golf events made it to television. By the 1960s, golf was becoming a television favorite, and the Masters was the top event in televised golf.

The Masters, of course, was Palmer's signature tournament, indelibly associated with him. Palmer played in an incredible 50 consecutive Masters tournaments, from 1955 to 2004. He won four of them – in 1958, 1960, 1962, and 1964. In 2007, he began serving as the honorary starter for the first round of the Masters, hitting the tournament's first shot each year. "It's a great thrill," he told the Augusta Chronicle as he teed off at the 2009 Masters.

Though Palmer was the king of the Masters, it was far from the only championship he took home. He won the British Open twice, in 1961 and 1962, and the U.S. Open once, in 1960. A host of other minor championships dotted his record, from the 1956 Eastern Open to the 1962 Palm Springs Golf Classic to the 1981 U.S. Senior Open, with dozens in between.

Palmer was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974. The PGA Tour honored him with their lifetime achievement award in 1998 and their Payne Stewart Award in 2000, the first year it was offered. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004 – the first golfer to receive that honor – and the Congressional Gold Medal in 2009. Nicknamed the King, he was befriended by presidents from Dwight Eisenhower to George W. Bush.

Among Palmer's less serious honors is the drink that bears his name. The Arnold Palmer is a mixture of iced tea and lemonade, and it's named after the golfing legend simply because he loved to drink it. He carried a thermos of the beverage while he played, and he ordered it in restaurants. Eventually, it became so associated with him that the catchy name stuck.

Palmer was also a pioneer of sports marketing, making millions of dollars in endorsements long after he retired from professional golf. He endorsed United Airlines, Pennzoil, Cadillac, and Rolex. As recently as 2016, he could be seen in a commercial for the blood-thinning prescription drug Xarelto.

In addition to golf, Palmer was an avid pilot. He flew for over 50 years; in 1999, the airport in his hometown was named Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in his honor.

Palmer was twice married, first to Winifred Walzer in 1954. They remained together for decades until her death in 1999. He remarried in 2005, to Kathleen Gawthrop, who survives him. He is also survived by his two daughters from his first marriage, Amy and Peggy.

In the wake of his death, Palmer was widely mourned and memorialized by fellow pro golfers as well as fans. A sampling of the social media posts that remembered Palmer's great golf game and winning personality:

Tiger Woods: “Thanks Arnold for your friendship, counsel and a lot of laughs. Your philanthropy and humility are part of your legend. It’s hard to imagine golf without you or anyone more important to the game than the King.”

Rory McIlroy: “Arnie put the game on the map. Don’t think any other sportsperson in any sport did for their profession what Arnie did for the game.”

Ricky Barnes: “Wow just got the chills. Nicest man in golf I have been around. And will never forget that practice round together at Augusta. Miss u King!!”

David Duval: “Not a single modern golf fan would be a fan without him. The King made golf cool.”

Arnie won the 1954 US Amateur at Country Club of Detroit, and decided to turn pro afterward. He came back in 2004 for the Turning Point Invitational to help raise money for the Detroit Cornerstone Schools. Many former US Amateur winners came to honor Arnie and the charity, and included Phil Mickelson, Mark O’Meara, Lanny Watkins and others. As a former caddie then groundskeeper during college summers at the CCD, it’s special that “it all started” for Arnie there. I had the privilege of playing many Mondays back in the seventies, and to see Arnie walking the fairways in 2004 was special. After the Turning Point, he asked: “can I come back to play anytime?” “Of course”, was the answer. The men’s locker room includes one badged Arnold Palmer now.

My husband was the Sheriff of Broome County, NY in the 1970's when Arnie came here for a tournament(BC Open). He stopped at the jail here because he needed a set of fingerprints related to a horse purchase. Sheriff John Andrews asked him if he would say hello to the inmates. Arnie said absolutely and spent the next couple hours greeting the inmates, who were thrilled. Doing this, something no one would ever know about, demonstrated Arnie's deep humility and humanity. May he rest in peace. My deepest sympathy to his family. Kate ([email protected])

Dear Mrs. Palmer and Family,

I wanted to add to the many kindnesses of others how sorry I am about Mr. Palmer's passing.
Mr. Palmer meant so many things to so many people. He was an important part of my Father's worldTy Barre, Coca-Cola Company. This past Christmas, I presented to my two sons a story board of their Grandfather's world which included the friendship of Mr. Palmer. You and your family shared so much of your life with the world of golf and many other accomplishments/ undertakings. I truly appreciate the sacrifices of being married to such an important individual thank you. So many times we, the people looking from the outside, take for granted famous individuals and the loving family support that help carry them to their dreams My prayers are with you and your family and pray that his memory of a life well lived will be a comfort and joy to hold in your hearts !!!

About 25 years ago my wife and I were standing alone on the 3rd fairway at Augusta. After hitting his tee shot, Mr Palmer walked down the fairway, looked over at us and waved as if we were his next door neighbor's. About 14 years ago we met Mr Palmer at Pebble Beach. He signed a score card for me and could have not been any nicer! Yes he was a great golfer, but he was in a league of his own in helping to make the world a better place to live and making those he met feel special.

Dear Mr. Palmer,
The news of your passing hit me very hard. We have never met but I feel like I've known you for decades. You were the only man in this world that reminds me of my dad who passed away in April of 2009. Not in my dads golf skills or in the number of lives he's effected, but in the way the both of you lived your life. As I said at my dads funeral, I've never met a single person that had a bad thing to say about my father. I feel the same about you. As my dad did for me for almost 60 years, he taught me how to act and how you should treat all people all the time. He was my mentor and role model just like you have been without you knowing. With 2 guys like you, how could I go wrong. I thank my dad everyday and I thank you also. One of my regrets in my life was not having the opportunity to meet you. RIP Mr. Palmer you will be greatly missed.

I met Arnold at a golf course he designed in the late '70's near Eureka, MT when we were standing near his airplane. My son had a new hat with the golf course's emblem. I asked Mr. Palmer if he would sign the young man's hat. Son, Andy, stood with mouth open in absolute awe of Arnold Palmer, who he watched on TV. Arnold said "Are you going to take your hat off or do I have to sign it on your head?" I handed him the hat & we spend a few minutes visiting with "The King". Andy still treasures the hat as I do the memory of that very special day.

Met him once in Milton, FL when I went to a preliminary round. Lots of reporters but I wore my WFU sweatshirt(class of '68'). Arnie finished practice putting and came over to speak to me. I loved it and the reporters hated it.

U made me proud to be from western PA. For someone to have had such an impact on his profession, and many times that as a human being says it all. You left the world a much better place Arnie. If only more people were like u. God bless you and your family.

Arnie I have been very fortunate to have met you 3 different times over the course of my life - You were my first hero in the game of golf when I met you at Rio Pinar Golf Club at the Citrus Open 1970 - I will never forget watching you play and then getting your autograph - My heart felt condolences to your family. I lost my father last month who met you as well and introduced me to the game some 55 years years ago when I was 8 -

Arnold Palmer played in one of his last professional tournaments a few years ago at the SAS Championship near Raleigh,NC. About midway through the round as he putted out and moved on the next tee, he was approached by an elderly women who asked for his autograph. Mr. Palmer politely told the lady that tournament rules prohibited him from doing so during play but he would be happy to sign an autograph for her at the conclusion of the round. After hitting his next tee shot, the King took about three steps before stopping to find the woman in the gallery and signing his name for her. I just know that during the minutes which passed in the interim he pondered the possibility that this lady would be unable to walk the rest of the way and find him among the throng even if she did. This was Arnold Palmer. Everywhere he played Arnold Palmer was the home team. For many of us who grew up in the 50's and 60's he was a figure who didn't transcend the game, he WAS the game. Jack and Tiger may be the greatest players the game has ever known. They thrived on the competition. Arnold Palmer competed as fiercely as anyone in the history of golf, but his intrinsic love of the game and its essence is what made him the King. We loved him and he loved us back. I was honored to be in his presence on several occasions as a member of the media and as a fan. I remember them all. Long live the King!!!

Most every time my wife and I dine out, we order an Arnold Palmer. It is not just because it is a refreshing drink, but it is done with admiration for the man himself. Rest in Peace, Arnie.

Arnold Palmer was not just a great golfer, he was a great human being. I remember waiting at the practice green at Pebble Beach for a glimpse of Arnold before his tee time at the Crosby Pro Am. I was 12 at the time.

Out came Arnie. Instead of putting he came over to the ropes and began greeting people and signing autographs. As he worked his way around to me, I gave him my hat to sign. He smiled and said "Do you play golf son?" I answered "I want to." He went to his bag and came back with a card. He asked my name. He wrote on the back of the card "Mr. Black, I think your son would enjoy learning golf, and I would consider it a personal favor if you got him started."

When I got home my Dad was shocked, but the next weekend we went to our first lesson together. I played for many years with my father until his passing. I still love the game today.

Thank you Arnie for taking the time and being so kind. Rest in Peace.

RIP Mr. Palmer. I have to say, I was never a fan of sports, but through you, I learned to love the game of golf and so enjoyed watching you play through the years. I grew up not 15 minutes from Latrobe, and your love of your roots is evident everywhere you go. God bless you, Sir....you truly were an inspiration to an entire country. There will never be another to follow you. May your soul forever rest on the greens of Heaven's land. You will be missed immensely...
