Mike Towell

Mike Towell, a Scottish welterweight boxer, died Friday, Sept. 30, 2016, after suffering severe bleeding and brain swelling following a match Thursday, according to multiple news sources. He was 25.

Towell was carried from the ring on a stretcher following his loss to Welsh boxer Dale Evans in Glasgow, Scotland. He had been suffering from headaches for the last couple of weeks before the fight, according to posts that his girlfriend, Chloe Ross, made on social media. It is unknown whether the headaches played a role in his fatal injuries.

Towell was undefeated before Thursday’s match, with a record of 11 wins and one draw. He was facing Evans when he collapsed in the ring. The fight, which was televised, was stopped in the fifth round, and he was rushed to the hospital. He was removed from life support early Friday and died 12 hours later.

Ross, who is the mother of his young son, wrote on Facebook, “It has been the longest 24 hours of our lives. My baby has lost his daddy. But he will be so so proud of his dad in what he achieved.”
