Howard Bingham Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 16, 2016.
Howard Bingham, a longtime personal photographer and friend of Muhammad Ali, died Thursday, Dec. 15, 2016, according to The Associated Press. He was 77.

Bingham had been in declining health and had recently undergone two surgeries, sports writer and friend Mohammad Mubarak told The Associated Press.

Bingham was known best for his long tenure as the personal photographer for world-champion boxer Muhammad Ali. For more than 50 years, he followed Ali, photographing his training, fights, meetings with dignitaries and celebrities, as well as more private moments. During that time, he formed a close friendship that lasted until Ali’s death earlier this year. In 1993, he published a photo-memoir, “Muhammad Ali: A Thirty-Year Journey.”

Born May 29, 1939, in Mississippi, Bingham grew up in Los Angeles. He enrolled at Compton Community College, where he claimed to have failed his first photography course.

In 1962, he was working for the Los Angeles Sentinel, a small African-American newspaper, when he was assigned to cover a boxing match featuring the young Cassius Clay. He befriended the boxer and his brother after the fight.

In addition to photographing Ali, Bingham also worked as a freelancer for several notable publications, including Look, Newsweek, Playboy, and Ebony. His camera caught several moments in American history, including the 1967 Detroit riots and the unrest at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

He also photographed the Black Panthers for a planned feature in LIFE magazine. After the article was canceled, Bingham finally published the photos in his 2009 book, “Howard L. Bingham’s Black Panthers 1968.”

What a varied list of individuals Mr Bingham encountered in his photography life. It would be nice if life could go on through photography, but it ends, unfortunately. Many of our loved ones have so much to give, but due to illness their giving comes to an end. Our loved ones will have an opportunity to continue that giving and fulfill other desires.

My dear friend, you will certainly be missed. I'll never forget the first time I met you and Ali in Lancaster, Pa. You both had just returned from the Middle East and arrived in Lancaster to promote the Ali candy bar and do a bit to raise funds for Muscular Dystrophy. Frank Evans, Esq. arrived in Lancaster prior to your arrival to lay the groundwork. Frank was having problems getting local cooperation and I was able to help him with introductions, which led to sales of Ali's candy bar and a car for a raffle. After helping Frank, he asked what I wanted in return and I said "all I want is the opportunity for me and my family to meet Ali". To that, Frank said "no problem". That became the start of many times in meeting Ali and you as our friendship developed and my son Adam became friends with your son's Damien and Dustin - they spent a week together at Deer Lake as Ali prepared for his fight with Larry Holmes.

I'll never forget the time you, Ali and I flew together on a private jet. You sat at the back of the plane fiddling with your film and cameras while I quizzed Ali about his fights and life as he and I sat knee-to-knee engrossed in conversation. Ali let me try on his ring denoting his 3 championships of the time as we landed in NYC.

I'll never forget the breakfast you and I shared together in LA several years ago when you presented me with an autograph copy of your book entitled Black Panthers 1968 and shared stories of your first meeting of Ali and his brother; and your time with the Panthers gathering info and photos for a story. And I recall introducing you to my daughter Yves-Lauren, over lunch, when I asked you to look after her as she began her modeling career.

Recently, I wondered why you had not returned my phone calls but now I know of the health issues, which I'm sure drained your strength. Yes, my friend, I will certainly miss you...my Sincere Condolences to your family and your many friends around the world, who like me enjoyed your company, your honesty and your warm personality.

Until we meet again...God bless you!

Your Friend,

Ralph C

Very sad to see another soul lost to the "power of the grave". But in the case of Howard Bingham and Muhammad Ali, how happy we will be when the promise of God comes true when he says "From death I will recover them". -Hosea 13:14

December 17, 2016

To Mr. Howard family, I am very sorry for your loss. The loss of those we love bring much sorrow. To take a camera and earn a living with it says much about his desire to achieve, a picture can say it all. I hope to use these word to comfort the family, because that is my desire. The hope for all who fall asleep is the "Kingdom" we were told to pray for. The Kingdom will bring the will of our Creator to the earth and peace will be on earth.(Matt6:9,10)

Howard's smile could like up a room. He was quick with laughter and a good story, and being with Howard was like being with civil rights history. His coverage of RFK's campaign, the Black Panthers, the riots. He saw it all. He documented it and shared it with all of us. He was humble as the day is long. And he cared. He knew how to be a friend. I lost touch with Howard a couple years ago when I left my job and George Eastman Museum where he was a trustee, but I have thought of him so often and consider knowing him a real privilege.
