Angus Jamerson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 3, 2017.
Angus Hardie "Jay" Jamerson, a veteran who served among the first African-American U.S. Marines during World War II, died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017, according to The Associated Press. He was 89.

His death was confirmed to The Associated Press by his daughter, Wendy Jamerson.

Jamerson was a student at Morehouse College in Atlanta when he was drafted in 1945. He was assigned to a segregated training area for African-American recruits called Montford Point. The Jacksonville, North Carolina, training area was established after President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered the Marine Corps to begin accepting African-Americans.

During the time Jamerson was at Montford Point, railroad tracks divided the white residents from the African-American troops. The Montford Point recruits were not allowed to enter the main base of nearby Camp Lejeune unless accompanied by a white Marine. During the Korean War, the Marine Corps became fully integrated.

Jamerson and other surviving Montford Point Marines were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in June 2012 for their forgotten historic role.

Wendy Jamerson told the AP her father didn't know about the congressional award until he read about it in the newspaper. She said he appeared nonchalant, telling her: "Well, you know, they're going to give me a medal." But Jamerson's pride was unmistakable.

"He did sleep with it for a couple of nights," his wife said. "We couldn't get it off him."

His wife Doris Jamerson told The Associated Press that her husband wanted to serve his country and "had no idea of the significance of it at all."

First, I want to extend my sincere sympathy for your loss. I did not know Mr. Jamerson nor have I ever served in the military. I just need you to know that his sacrifices both as a member of the military and as human being have deeply moved me. What calls to my mind is the movie "Glory". There were so many significant moments that reflect the hardships of men of color as they valiantly wished to serve the country they love while faced with people that could not get beyond the color of their brothers skin. The gospels state that true love is when one gives up their life for a friend. I thank you Mr. Jamerson, my father who served in WWII and all other people of color who then and now take the path of humility and wisdom for the sake of future generations. We are all, whether we know it or not, have a spiritual connection with each other. Thank you Mr. Jamerson for the legacy of your incredible courage, strength and wisdom as you have passed the baton of those that come after you. I am eternally grateful!

Thank you Marine Jamerson! You led the way for the Marine of my youth, Walter Byars of Boston. He tolerated us kids when he was home on leave. Time passed and I was Blessed to marry a great man, a Marine. The Gates of Heaven are guarded by the United States Marines and I know you got a happy "Welcome" from two of the best.

To the family of Angus Jamerson from the family of a fellow Montford Pointer.
Our father, Leroy Mack was a fellow Montiford Pointer as well. Daddy passed in 2014, but our family continue to support the Montiford Point Marine Association in any way that we can. Your husband, father and family member made the ultimate sacrifice when he joined the Marine Corp just as our father did. Know that God is in control of all things and He knows what is best. Your father along with our father and other Marines are up in heaven with the Lord talking about the "Good old Days" of being a Montiford Pointer and the struggles they went through in order to be called Marines. But remember God makes no mistakes. Hold on to the memories that you have of your father, and Hold on to God's unchanging hand and I know that He will see you through the rough days ahead. Keep holding on God is ever near to those who call on His name. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this most difficult time, but remember your father is in a better place.
Cynthia Mack Johnson & the family of LeRoy A. Mack.

Doris,
I would like to say thanks for your husband's service to our country. Reading his obituary, I can imagine he may have been like my dad. My dad was in the Marines (Fifth Division) and battled on Iwo Jima, then occupied Hiroshima after the bomb. All this at such a young age...I can't imagine the strength and courage they had - truly heroes!
