Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 14, 2017.
Tod Sloan, a Canadian former NHL player who made a critical play to help the Toronto Maple Leafs get to overtime and win the Stanley Cup in 1951, died Wednesday, July 12, 2017, according to the team. He was 89.

“We are saddened to learn of the passing of former Maple Leaf Tod Sloan,” the Maple Leafs wrote on the team’s official Twitter account. “Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”

He was born Aloysius Martin Sloan Nov. 30, 1927, in Litchfield, Quebec. After playing junior hockey with the team run by St. Michael’s College School in Toronto, he played for the Pittsburgh Hornets of the American Hockey League in 1946.

His NHL debut came in the 1947-1948 season with the Maple Leafs. His early professional play was undistinguished, as he didn’t make the playoffs when the Leafs won the championship in 1949. In 1951, however, Sloan made an impact. He led his team with 31 goals in the regular season, adding four goals and nine assists during the playoffs.

He scored two goals in the Game 5 clincher, including the shot that tied it up. His teammate Bill Barilko went on to win the game in overtime.

In 1957, Toronto traded Sloan to the Chicago Black Hawks. He was with the Hawks when they won the 1961 NHL championship. His name appears as Martin Sloan on that Stanley Cup.

Sloan retired from professional ice hockey the following year.

In 745 games played in his NHL career, Sloan scored 220 goals, had 262 assists, and amassed 482 points. He played 47 playoff games, scoring nine goals and notching 12 assists.

At the time of his death, Sloan ranked 38th on the list of the top 100 Maple Leaf players of all time.

Its only now that I learned of Tod's passing. Treasure your memories of happier times. Years ago I remember Gerald McBride my father-in-law telling me that he & Tod were cousins. I have no idea how they were related though. My thoughts & prayers are with all of you.
