Gord Downie Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 18, 2017.
TORONTO (AP) — Gord Downie, who made himself part of Canada's national identity with songs about hockey and small towns as lead singer and songwriter of iconic rock band The Tragically Hip, has died at age 53 after a battle with brain cancer.

A statement on the band's website said he died Tuesday night "with his beloved children and family close by." The statement did not give a cause of death, though he had been diagnosed earlier with brain cancer.

Since The Tragically Hip's first album in 1987, the band has provided a soundtrack for the lives of many Canadians. "Ahead by a Century" and "Bobcaygeon" are among the best known.

While Canadian musicians Drake, the Weeknd and Justin Bieber have made waves internationally, the Tragically Hip built a huge following of die-hard homegrown fans.

An emotional Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wept in Parliament while talking about Downie on national television in a statement to reporters.

"We are less as a country without Gord Downie in it. We all knew it was coming but we hoped it wasn't," said Trudeau, his voice breaking. "I thought I was going to make it through this but I'm not. It hurts. "

Trudeau also said in a written statement that "Downie uncovered and told the stories of Canada. He was the frontman of one of Canada's most iconic bands, a rock star, artist, and poet whose evocative lyrics came to define a country."

"He loved every hidden corner, every aspect of this country that he celebrated his whole life. And he wanted to make it better," Trudeau said in Ottawa.

Downie was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive and incurable brain cancer, in December 2015. When the band made the news public the following May, expressions of sorrow poured in from across the country.

That same day, the band said it would mount a Canadian tour despite Downie's cancer. Tickets for the 2016 summer tour sold out almost immediately, culminating in a national broadcast of the band's final tour stop at Kingston, Ontario. Millions tuned in.

Downie later said that he needed six teleprompters during the concert series so he would not forget lyrics. But through it all, Downie remained the consummate showman, rocking out on stage in distinctive leather suits.

"God knew this day was coming — his response was to spend his precious time as he always had — making music, making memories and expressing deep gratitude to his family and friends for a life well lived, often sealing it with a kiss ... on the lips," the Downie family said in a statement.

During his final show, Downie called out to Trudeau, who attended the concert, to help fix problems in Canada's aboriginal communities.

A few months after that concert, Downie released a solo album with an accompanying graphic novel and animated film inspired by the tragedy of state-funded church schools that Canadian aboriginal children were forced to attend from the 19th century until the 1970s. He said his "Secret Path" project was aimed at Canada's decades-long government policy of requiring aboriginal children to attend residential schools, where physical and sexual abuse was often rampant.

Born in Amherstview, Ontario, Downie said he "always had a keen ear for music" and while all the other kids were spending their allowance on baseball trading cards, he was buying records "from the fathers of rock 'n' roll."

While at university, he met Paul Langlois, Rob Baker, Gord Sinclair and Johnny Fay, and they formed The Tragically Hip, which started out as a cover band.

Their first self-titled EP was released in 1987 and their breakthrough debut full-length album, "Up to Here," was released in 1989. Since then they have released 14 studio albums, two live albums, one EP and 54 singles. Nine of their albums have reached No. 1 in Canada. They have received numerous Canadian music awards, including 14 Juno awards, the equivalent of the Grammy in Canada.

The band's 2012 album, "Now for Plan A," was lyrically influenced by Downie's wife and her successful battle with breast cancer.

Downie also produced three solo albums since 2001, as well as a collaboration with fellow Canadian indie darlings The Sadies.

Downie is survived by his wife and four children.

I miss Gord every day. I was at a festival in Hinton, AB last weekend and they had various musicians playing Hip songs and it was the first time I had heard Hip songs played live since their final tour in 2016 and it brought tears to my eyes. Gord and The Hip will be with us forever. I will continue missing him every day and am so thankful and truly grateful for what he left us. He was an amazing human.

Its taken me a while to be able to do this. I first heard of The Hip while working in a bar in Anchorage, Alaska in the late 80s. The DJ had just returned from a vacation somewhere in Canada, and played New Orleans Is Sinking one night. After hounding him to play it over and over, he finally recorded the first two slbims on a cassette for me. Over the years, I have bought everything tecorded by them, and by Gord. Living in Michigan, i was fortunate to see the band perform 9 times, including the 25th Anniversary of Fully Completely's release in Chicago. The music of TTH and Gord is the soundtrack of my life, from age 24 on. The passing of Gord, who is the same age as me, was the third most painful day of my life. I would say to his family and banfmates, thank you for sharing this wonderful soul with the world. While he is gone, the light from his soul continues to light my world

In the summer of 1993 I went on a road trip with my sister Tammy and her kids to Vancouver and I was introduced to this "annoying" music. Little did I know that this music and the front man would be one of my most favorite sounds.
In 1995 I saw The Tragically Hip live for the first time and I watched the crowd get amped when it was their time to come on stage. I watched Gord intently and immediately loved his energy. I was sold. This "annoying" music came with great performance. Seven shows later and too many missed...
Being from a small town came with bush parties. And what was cranked at these parties? Plenty of tracks from the Hip. Their music was very uplifting, fun and brought crowds together. With teen angst in full effect, I found myself listening to the Hip to cope. So I listened repeatedly and memorized every song that Gord sang. Any loss I suffered, the Hip was there. His poetry and calming voice made feel something when I thought there was nothing left to feel.
When I heard the news of Gord's terminal cancer, It was like an era was ending. I was devastated. I was lucky enough and so very grateful to get last minute tickets for the second show in Edmonton of the Hip's last tour. There I saw a man that loved his people and I was so happy to be one of them.
On Oct 18, I got a text from my best friend saying "Did you hear the sad news?", which I hadn't, so I went on Facebook and the first post I saw was "RIP Gord". Coincidentally, a post from my sister Tammy. Full circle I needed to express my love for him, which I know is shared with many. He is my number one. The first celebrity death to break my heart. It was a sad day in Canada, but I choose to be grateful for the joy Gord brought in my life and what he did for my country and it's people. ❤
Rest Easy Gord. Your great work will never be forgotten and will live on my heart and many fellow Canadians.

Thank you Gord Downie for the music and poetry of my youth and for truly embodying what it means to be Canadian. I heard the Hip play live in St. Louis, must have been around 1997 or '98. Very small turnout, but I did wear my 97.7 HTZ-FM t-shirt. Gord saw it, pointed at me and smiled. Cut to 10/21/17 when The Trews performed "Fireworks" in tribute. I arrived home in Buffalo to see a velvety black sky with stars that sparkled like jewelry. Both times it seemed as if it was just Gord and me, one a hello, one a goodbye.

The first time I heard your music, it was 1993; I was at a bar in Milwaukee and New Orleans Is Sinking came on over the speakers. I asked the bartender who is this? And he told me. And that was it. That Was IT. Ever since, your writing has been the first place I would go when I was feeling uneasy, feeling brave, feeling content, flying my freak flag, facing loss, facing death, facing life. All of it. I'm so grateful to have found my way to you. My condolences to your family, friends and the fans.

Gord,
Thank you. When I was living in the U.S as a kid, I missed home. I missed poutine, snow and Timmies. I was also out of touch with home, and was desperately looking for something to anchor me. I always felt better when I was listening to the Hip, and that grounded me again. As the years past, I always kept my favourite songs on my iPod, and had a big grin on my face when the Hip came on. My American friends had no idea why I was so excited about you guys, but that's what made it special. The Tragically Hip is so distinctly Canadian, and that's what made you so special to me during these years. Your words and music acted as my anchor.

I will always be grateful to the Hip for keeping me close to home, even when I was so far away. You, Gord, will always be an icon, and our Shakespeare.

Hey man,
Thanks.
