Malcolm Young Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 18, 2017.
NEW YORK (AP) - Malcolm Young, the rhythm guitarist and guiding force behind the bawdy hard rock band AC/DC who helped create such head-banging anthems as "Highway to Hell," ''Hells Bells" and "Back in Black," has died. He was 64.

AC/DC announced the death Saturday on their official Facebook page and website Saturday. A representative for the band confirmed that the posts were true. The posts did not say when or where Young died, but said the performer had been suffering from dementia. He was diagnosed in 2014.

"It is with deepest sorrow that we inform you of the death of Malcolm Young, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother. Malcolm had been suffering from Dementia for several years and passed away peacefully with his family by his bedside," one of the posts read.

The family put out a statement posted on the band's website calling Young a "visionary who inspired many."

While Young's younger brother, Angus, the group's school-uniform-wearing lead guitarist, was the public face of the band, Malcolm Young was its key writer and leader, the member the rest of the band watched for onstage changes and cutoffs.

AC/DC were remarkably consistent for over 40 years with its mix of driving hard rock, lusty lyrics and bluesy shuffles, selling over 200 million albums, surviving the loss of its first singer and creating one of the greatest rock records ever in "Back in Black," the world's second best-selling album behind Michael Jackson's "Thriller."

The Glasgow-born Young brothers - who moved to Sydney, Australia, with their parents, sister and five older brothers in 1963 - formed the band in 1973. They were inspired to choose the high-energy name AC/DC from the back of a sewing machine owned by their sister, Margaret.

Angus experimented with several different stage costumes at first - including a gorilla suit and a Zorro outfit - but the school uniform was a natural, since he was only 16 at the time.

The Youngs went through several drummers and bass guitarists, finally settling on Phil Rudd on drums in 1974 and Englishman Cliff Williams on bass three years later. Their original singer was fired after a few months when they discovered Bon Scott, who was originally hired as the band's driver.

By 1980, the band was on a roll, known for its high energy performances and predictably hard-charging songs. Their album "Highway To Hell" was certified gold in America and made it into the top 25 Billboard album charts, and the single "Touch Too Much" became their first UK Top 30 hit. But on Feb. 18, 1980, everything changed - Scott died of asphyxiation after choking on his own vomit after an all-night drinking binge.

The band decided to keep going and hired English vocalist Brian Johnson at the helm. The newly reconfigured group channeled their grief into songwriting and put out 1980's "Back In Black," with the songs "You Shook Me All Night Long," ''Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution" and "Hells Bells." The cover of the album was black, in honor of Scott's death.

The band continued with a studio or live album every few years , blending their huge guitar riffs with rebellious and often sophomoric lyrics - song titles include "Big Balls," ''Beating Around the Bush," ''Let Me Put My Love Into You" and "Stiff Upper Lip." AC/DC won only a single Grammy Award, for best hard rock performance in 2009 for "War Machine."

Rolling Stone said in 1980 that "the AC/DC sound is nothing more and nothing less than aggressively catchy song hooks brutalized by a revved-up boogie rhythm, Malcolm's jackhammer riffing, Angus' guitar histrionics and Johnson's bloodcurdling bawl."

In the book "The Youngs: The Brothers Who Built AC/DC" by Jesse Fink, Angus Young said the formula worked. "We've got the basic thing kids want," he said. "They want to rock and that's it. They want to be part of the band as a mass. When you hit a guitar chord, a lot of the kids in the audience are hitting it with you. They're so much into the band they're going through all the motions with you. If you can get the mass to react as a whole, then that's the ideal thing. That's what a lot of bands lack, and why the critics are wrong."

AC/DC's infectious, driving sound stretched further than rock arenas. The song "Shoot to Thrill" was heard in the film "The Avengers," ''Back in Black" made it into "The Muppets," ''Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" was played in "Bridesmaids" and their songs were included in the "Iron Man" franchise. On TV, the band's music was heard in everything from "Top Gear," the "Hawaii Five-0" reboot, "Glee," ''CSI: Miami" and "The Voice."

Though the band championed good-natured hell-raising, it had to weather suggestions in the 1980s that they were a threat to the moral fabric of society. There were rumors the band's name stood for Anti-Christ/Devil's Children and many were shocked when it was learned that serial murderer and rapist Richard Ramirez identified himself as a fan and left an AC/DC baseball cap behind at a crime scene.

In 2014, the band released "Rock or Bust," the first AC/DC album without Malcom Young. Even so, he is very present on the record since the 11 songs are credited to the Young brothers (Angus said he built the album from guitar hooks the two had accumulated over the years).

Around the album's release, Angus Young told The Associated Press that Malcolm was doing fine, but that he couldn't perform anymore.

"It was progressing further, but he knew he couldn't do it," Angus Young said of his older brother's dementia. "He had continued as long as he could, still writing. But he said to me, 'Keep it going.'"

The fate of the band was also put into doubt by the retirement of Williams, legal trouble for Rudd and Johnson's hearing loss, which forced him to leave. The band enlisted Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose to sing on tour in 2016.

From my rebellious teens, when my Dad took away my Dirty Deeds album, and said to me in his Scottish Brogue "You're no listening to that crap in my hoos" referencing Big Balls as it was cranked on his Record Player, giving me Air Supply "Im All Outta Love" in place of it.
To my first concert at CNE Stadium in Toronto, with Loudness opening for them.
To now, close to 50, listening and drumming along to Highway to Hell, High Voltage, Let There be Rock, ACDC has truly been part of my identity and forever will be!
Here's tae us, wha's like us, Damn few, and they're all Deed!
Long Live Rock, Long Live Malcom Young!

There are no words to truly express his loss..AC/DC is proof of how powerful an impact their music will always have on our soul. I remember my heart sank when the news flashed that Malcolm had passed
I was moved again when I read the eulogies hi-lighting their rare qualities and impact on the fickle world of rock 'n roll. To quote the beautiful words of Angus..Malcolm, job well done

A tribute by David Albert to MALCOLM YOUNG delivered at Malcolm's Funeral Service

O'Linda, Ross, Cara and Josh, Myla, Cosmo and Starlie,
On behalf of the Young family, I would firstly like to pay tribute to the wonderful carers who are here today and who have looked after Malcolm with such incredible care, sensitivity and kindness.
From Around the Clock Care: Collin Levi, Antal Kopunovics, Patrick Varden, Phillipe Da Silva, Thomas Bhattarai, Arthur Dar tag nan, Afonso Pre-era and Ann Butt. And, Cindy and all her staff From Lulworth House. A HEARTFELT THANKYOU
What a privilege and an honour to have the opportunity to speak today on behalf of the music industry, the wider Albert family and the millions of fans of Malcolm Young.
A quiet, humble, understated and modest individual. But also, a musical mastermind, a rock legend in the true sense and a person who inspired and continues to inspire so many people.
Malcolm and AC/DC's impact both locally and globally is nothing short of momentous.
You will know most of the stats, but to recap a few. They have sold over 200 million albums and have been streamed almost a billion times. Back in Black is the second biggest selling album of all time. Their Black Ice tour was attended by an audience of nearly 5 million people. They have received APRA awards, ARIA awards, Grammy awards and even had a street and a lane, named after them. In May 2003 Angus and Malcolm were honored with the Ted Albert Award for Outstanding Services to Australian music.
In that same year they were inducted into the American Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Dress code. Strictly black tie. Thanks, but no thanks said Malcolm. Customary jeans and singlet for me. So the dress rule was changed, just for that year.
The outpouring of emotion and tributes, from musicians around the world is also an indication of the deep-seated admiration felt for Malcolm. Musicians included Paul Stanley from Kiss, Ozzy Osbourne, Eddie Van Halen and Def Leppard.
The highly respected Dave Grohl said AC/DC is everything that rock and roll should be. Thank you Malcolm for the songs and the feel and the cool and the years of losing control to your rock and roll.
And even our Prime Minister when asked last week by rock radio station MMM, to name his favourite AC/DC song picked the all-time classic If You Leave Me Can I Come Too.'
What a shame it is a pop song by Mental as Anything.
For all this, Malcolm had little interest in fame. It was never about the gold records, the awards, the adulation and the praise. Because while the world may be mourning the loss of one of the greatest rhythm guitarists of all time, underneath it was a quiet and humble man who throughout his life remained deeply loyal to his family, the band and the music. Nothing more. Nothing less.
As Brad has already spoken about, music was a big part of Malcolm's early life.
Both he and Angus dabbled with their own rock bands during their teens and then, in 1971, Malcolm joined the Velvet Underground, occasionally providing backing for another Alberts artist, the balladeer Ted Mulry. This didn't always please Malcolm, who was known to skulk offstage during some of Mulry's more sentimental songs.
In early 1973, brother George Young and Harry Vanda invited Malcolm and Angus into the studio with them to record some songs. It marked not only the recording debut of Malcolm and Angus, but more significantly, the beginning of what would become a close and influential relationship with George and Harry. In fact, in 1968 Harry had given Malcolm his precious 1963 Gretsch. Known as the Beast, this guitar would travel with Malcolm through much of his early career and play a role in the creation of that AC/DC sound. A sound that would capture the toughness and joy of life in the Australian suburbs.
It wasn't long before Malcolm decided to set up his own band, and invited Angus to audition. This came as a surprise to many who knew their (at times), somewhat intensive brotherly relationship. However, when music was involved, it created an explosive energy between the two and a sound that was powerful, liberating and exciting. Simple, pure, unadulterated rock 'n' roll.
On New Years Eve, 1973 a new band took to the stage at Chequers Nightclub in Sydney and played like their life depended on it. Nobody had heard of them. They were named AC/DC after a symbol on a sewing machine.
Fifa Riccobono remembers They went out there with this belief, that fabulous cockiness that I've never seen displayed by any other band. A band playing to seven people who were so sure they were going to go out and conquer the world.
And conquer it they did.
From the outset Malcolm displayed the traits that would come to define him and shape the band's success: a laser like vision for their future; an uncompromising determination; a sharp and tough business mind; an uncanny gift for song-writing, and, of course, that incredible guitar playing.
By June 1974 AC/DC had been signed by Ted Albert to Albert Productions, a relationship that continues to this day.
While it is easy to think that AC/DC's success came overnight, their ultimate rise to international stardom came after years and years of plugging away on the local, then international touring circuit, often doing three shows a day before returning to the studio to record. In 1980, with the release of Back in Black, AC/DC was finally recognised as one of the greatest rock bands of our lifetime. And the rest they say, is history.
Family was central to Mal's life.
First and foremost, his immediate family; O'Linda, Ross, Cara, Josh and Mal's three beautiful grandchildren. As that well-known line goes; It is a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll'. And at times it was just that. As happens to so many of us, life threw up its fair share of challenges but throughout, his immediate family were Malcolm's greatest fans and O'Linda has always been an absolute tower of strength.
Then there was the unique and special relationship between Malcolm, his sister Margaret and the other Young brothers. This was a bond built on a shared love for music and the challenges of moving to a foreign land as immigrants that would have been unforgiving and tough. We should at this point recognise the recent passing of older brother George Young, who also left his own remarkable musical legacy. And to mention the impact on Angus, who has lost two brothers in such a quick succession. Angus, your strength, courage and support has been truly remarkable.
Family has also been at the core of the relationship between Malcolm and the Alberts. A life long bond which extends back almost 45 years. The connection between Ted Albert and Malcolm was a truly unique one based on a mutual level of trust and respect and a shared interest and passion for music. As Malcolm said, we wouldn't be here without Ted. For all his input in the beginning, in having the faith. And the Young brothers would be there for Alberts in 1990 when Ted Albert tragically passed away, aged 53. Although the band could have considered other options in the future, Malcolm and Angus chose to stay with Alberts, honouring Ted's memory and repaying the loyalty he had shown them with their own.
Fifa Riccobono has also been a part of Malcolm's extended family. Fifa, our slightly feisty Sicilian, was there from AC/DC's beginning, developing and maintaining a professional trust that can be rare in the music industry. In fact, it was Fifa who introduced Malcolm to O'Linda whilst working at Alberts. Fifa was a close friend of Malcolm's and best friend and confidante to O'Linda.
And then there was the band, which in its own way was an extended family. As those who have worked with bands know, they can be complicated. The respect for Malcolm is demonstrated by the many members of the AC/DC family who travelled from all around the world to be here today. Thankyou Brian, Cliff and Phil, Tim, Alvin, Opie, Cosmo, Pabs and Harry Whits.
And last but not least are the fans. The ones who were so important to Malcolm. The emotion and outpouring of grief from around the world has been deeply moving. Although Malcolm would have struggled being the centre of attention today, he would have been very appreciative that the AC/DC fans are such a key part of this service, even if the stack of Marshall Amps are a little light on.
I joined Alberts in 2004 and I remember meeting with Malcolm and Angus in their London recording studio in 2005. For five hours we sat in a smoke-filled room, my eyes stinging and watering, drinking tea, eating pizza subs and talking about everything from family to books, football and their conspiracy theory on the internet. Possibly a precursor to their initial view on downloads!
When I asked how things were going musically, Malcolm replied in his typical low-key manner Oh, okay, we are just working on a couple of ideas'. Stuck to the wall in the studio was a list longer than my arm which I am sure included at least 40 new songs
A favourite memory was a dinner that Vicki, my wife and I had at a restaurant with Mal, O'Linda and Ross in Sydney. Malcolm was in his customary outfit of jeans and black t-shirt, Ross was enjoying a dozen oysters while entertaining the table, reading from a book of jokes. The waiter was totally oblivious that he was in the presence of rock royalty. For Malcolm, this was life as it should be. In the presence of his family with no fuss.
Whether it was because I was Ted's nephew or the deep-seated loyalty and integrity that was a hallmark of Malcolm's way of doing business he always treated me with the upmost respect. And I will always remember him for this and his friendship.
So how does one conclude when speaking about someone who has had such a major impact on our collective lives. Should there be the fanfare of fireworks, the blasting sound of a dozen cannons, a lyric from a favourite AC/DC song or the enduring resonance of a chord struck on a guitar?
Or should we quote from the irrepressible Jack Black in the movie School of Rock',
Now raise your goblet and make a toast to those who rock.
Or should there simply be a moment of silence in respect of the passing of a quiet and humble man who inspired a generation and who always maintained his integrity and stayed loyal and committed to his family, the music and the band, throughout his life.
Mal, you will be missed.
Thankyou.

Eulogy by Bradley Horsburgh

What a daunting prospect to attempt to sum up the remarkable life of Malcolm. It's always hard to try and put into words exactly what someone means to you, let alone trying to figure out how to convey the scope of how much one person can mean to so many in such varied ways. Perhaps the best place to start is to show how much better Mal was at doing this than I am. I could spend hours trying to rouse an emotion or an idea from all of you, Mal could do it with a few bars.

Malcolm Mitchell Young was born on the Cranhill housing estate in the industrial Scottish city of Glasgow on January 6th 1953, the seventh of eight children born to William and Margaret. Raised in the shadow of the Cranhill Water Tower, it was in 1963, when Malcolm was 10, that William immigrated his family to start a new life in Sydney, Australia. The other side of the world - it certainly was a long way to the top.

Originally staying at the Villawood hostel, the family quickly moved to Burwood where Malcolm attended the local public school before moving on to Ashfield Boys High.

As a teenager he was a keen soccer player and his passion for the game remained through his entire life with his support of Rangers and Man United. Besides soccer it was music that was prevalent in the house and, encouraged by elder brother George, Malcolm and younger brother Angus began honing their guitar skills, sharing their love for music in a bond which would last a lifetime.

After finishing school, Malcolm worked as a machinist at the Hestia bra factory, a fitter and turner by day & rock n' roller by night.

Malcolm was passionately dedicated to music. It was obvious nearly instantly just how knowledgeable he was when it came to his craft. Stories from the studio tell of an intuitive and precise musician whose heart was on fire with the spirit of rock and whose blood ran with the blues. I'd like to think it was that fire that drove Malcolm to achieve such greatness and perfect his skills. It was the same fire you could see when he'd hum along to the music of Chuck Berry, Little Richard or Muddy Waters.

In all his travels, Australia was always at the core of Malcolm's life. It was here that he grew up and along with Angus formed their band, he met his future wife O'Linda in Sydney, both their children, Cara & Ross spent much of their childhood here and now his grandchildren similarly are enjoying the Australian way of life. For a family who were stationed around the globe, Australia (ironically the furthest place from pretty much anywhere else) became a sort of meeting point and, more importantly, home. As Malcolm noted, when comparing Australia with the UK, if nothing else, the weather here is much better.

Professionally, Malcolm has been hailed as the greatest rhythm guitarist of all time and the determined, no nonsense driving force and engine room of AC/DC, but he couldn't be further from the stereotype of the megastar musician. To those who knew him, he was gentle and humble. Above all for Malcolm came family. Even in his later years, the smile on his face at family gatherings said it all. He loved spending time with his siblings, wife, children, grandchildren and extended family and was always one to make sure that everyone felt at home when they were with him.

For many years, NYE was celebrated with family and friends heading to the highest point of his Balmain home to catch the fireworks. Malcolm would find the gaps and make sure we all had a good view. He must've always been standing on his toes somewhere in the background (which, barring standing on toes, was also his favourite place on stage).

It was a shame that Malcolm's nimbleness on the guitar didn't always transfer to other aspects of life. He was famous for rhythm but infamous for boating skills. Late night fishing contests (minus the caught fish), a sail boat sinking before it even got past the slip way into the lagoon, a catamaran choosing to disobey orders while an international flight was ready to depart, we could almost blame him personally for rising sea levels caused by far too many anchors lost at sea. Perhaps most telling of all: not since the release of Jaws were people so afraid to go into the water after seeing a boat grounded on the sand, tipped on it's side and just a little bit on fire.

At the core of Malcolm's outlook on life was a firm grip on the working class he had come from. He was always two steps from the spot light. It gave him the grounding to remember that fame and fortune are meaningless without taking the time to appreciate and enjoy the simple pleasures in life: a family bus trip to Kangaroo Valley, silly card games, a laugh at a dumb comedy film or a rare shopping outing to Gowings where Mal was very pleased to walk out with two pairs of jeans and half a dozen black t-shirts.

I remember fondly my first trip to London. My body clock hadn't reset so I was still waking up far too early. Malcolm would also normally be up early and we'd sit around the kitchen table having a chat over a cup of tea. He wanted to make sure I'd really enjoy my trip and would suggest places to go and things to do. He'd speak fondly of his time working at the bra factory and growing up in Burwood. There was one story where Malcolm recalled returning home to Balmain after years of touring the world to be greeted by the housekeeper who shrieked with surprise to finally meet the homeowner, you used to be under my machine fixing it at Hestia

Beyond everything else, I remember Mal's advice for life: there will always be people trying to tear you down. When you find them, you tell them they can go well I can't finish the rest of that line in a Cathedral, but you get the point. His general attitude to being knocked down in life: get up, dust yourself off, and just deal with it, because you can.

Malcolm has left us all too soon and the world is a slightly darker place for him not being in it, but the spark of his talent and passionate desire to shine a rock n' roll beacon will live on forever. The world will remember him for his astounding career. How lucky we all are to be able to remember him for so much more.

In the words of Angus, Malcolm, job well done.

I listen to AC DC almost everyday and I send my thoughts and prayers to the family and the band, especially Angus. I am 58 years old from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in the US and I have been listening to AC DC since I was about 16. The sound is pure and runs through me even to this day - every song. Malcolm has left a vast and vital legacy and yes, it was a job well done. Many prayers.

Dear Mrs. Young and family!
I live in northern Germany and am 52 years old!
Last year, on the eleventh of November, I lost my mother and, unfortunately, your husband died on the eighteenth of November!
Since these two days, candles are burning in front of my door and in my heart!
Your husband has always taken a place in my life and will always take a place in my heart!
Not a day goes by without me thinking about your husband and listening to his music!
If I had met your husband in person, I would have had only one thing to say:
"Thank you!"
I hope to someday meet your husband, Bon and all the good people again!

Best regards,
Gerd Domnik

Dear Family,
it took to me a long time to express with words my feelings for this enormous loss. I am sure all of you already know, but I need to share that I experienced always such a big respect, commitment, dedication, to us as audience by the way the art of Malcolm was so beautifully crafted, and precisely articulated, that it is for me an honour having to be one of his fans. I think he also wanted to express us gratefulness for being his audience and I feel I receive an immense gift from listening and trying to play his music. Thanks Malcolm, for having shared such a treasure with all of us. Rest in peace.

AC/DC has had and still have a big place in my heart and soul since I heared them for the first time in 1974. I will be a AC/DC fan till the day I die. And aspecially Malcolm has been my man in the band. When I had cancer 10 years ago and almost died I listened a lot to my favourite band and that actually helped (I like to think). So rest in peace, my friend and thank you to you and all the others in the band, dead & alive, and hpoe to see you one day weither it is gonna be upstairs or downstairs - love from Bengt Geir

It is with tears in my eyes that I send my condolences to Malcolm's family and friends. ACDC has been a part of my life since 1978 when I saw you for the first time in Sweden. I am 51 years old and your music will be played at my home until the day I die. Once again my condolences to you from Sweden. R.I.P. Malcolm.

AC/DC were an integral part of my life from the early 80's and are still the greatest band I ever saw live. Malcolm was an essential part of that and underpinned the theatrics of the live show. The music world is a little bit poorer because he has passed, and my life a little bit less rich and fun. Luckily, he left an incredible legacy with which to fill the missing parts. My deepest condolences go out to his family and friends. He will be missed.

The first time I was torn to death by the death of a world-famous man. While for me and for many other true fans of the band, it's not just a world-famous person, but a real hero ... Heaven always takes the best of the best ... You meant a lot to us all and this can not even be expressed in simple language. Rest in peace, our dear Mel. Despite the "hell" music, you definitely occupy a place of honor in Paradise ... Thank you for the huge contribution to the music industry. For me, you will always be a best rhythm guitar player around the world and no one will be any better. R.I.P. Malcolm Mitchell Young ... We never forget you.

RIP and rock in peace.
