Jim Pike Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 20, 2019.
Jim Pike was a co-founder and lead singer of the popular vocal pop group The Lettermen. Pike formed the group in 1961 with college friend Bob Engemann and Tony Butala. Their terrific harmonies were a success right away, charting their Grammy nominated song, “The Way You Look Tonight,” that same year. They were most popular in the 1960s, hitting the Billboard charts 20 times including the songs “When I Fall in Love” and “Theme from A Summer Place.” His brother Gary joined the group in 1967, replacing Engemann. Jim Pike’s voice wore out from constant touring and he left the group in 1973. He regained his voice and later started a new vocal group with Engemann.

We invite you to share condolences for Jim Pike in our Guest Book.

Jim pike was a member of the church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints in big bear lake ca where i had the privilege of knowing him and his dear wife sue. They both were a light to all who knew them. I am saddened to learn of jims passing after all this time... one thing i do know though is anyone who knew jim knows exactly where he is and that he is continuing the good work. May you keep our heavenly Father as entertained as you did all of us here on earth, we love you jim, and you will forever be in our hearts.

Jimmy Pike and I were best friend in the first grade. We went to Washington Grade School, in Twin Falls, Idaho. Then again in the sixth and part of the seventh grade we were best friends. His dad, Russ and I ran together, well we picked spuds together. We did a few other things together also. One time Jimmy and I went to the radio studio were Jimmy was to sing with his Dad and his band, Russ Pike and the Prairie Knights. In the middle of the the seventh grade we moved back to Hailey. I saw Russ and his band one time after that. I still have a snap shot of Jimmy, his bike, Gary, and Russ' horse Boots.

(Sister) Susan (Pike), You probably don't remember my wife Bev and me, but we came to know you and Jim in the Palm Desert Ward when we would 'snowbird' to Cathedral City from Kalama. I was just listening to some of the Lettermen's recordings on YouTube, and just Googled Jim's name to see what was up and was so sorry to hear of his passing.

The Lettermen was one of the groups we really enjoyed listening to and to actually meet one of them and find out what fine people you are was a joy. We came back one year and found that you had moved to Arizona and were sorry that we didn't have the chance to say good-bye.

May the Lord bless you and your daughter with all the blessings there are. But the greatest blessing is that we know you will be reunited as a family thanks to the Gospel.

With our greatest condolences,

Wayne and Bev Cooke

Dear Sue, I can't even imagine how tough it is for you at losing Jim. I can't add much to our phone conversation of a few days ago except to say I do share in your grief. After two wonderful nationwide tours as drummer with the original Lettermen, I have only great memories of the guys. I saw Jim as my "alter-ego" because we shared the same passion for modern harmonies. Jim was a major influence in my life. When Bobby died and Jimmie's voice left him, his brothers Gary and Donny took their places without dropping a beat, with great voices and stage presence. What a legacy they have left us. Be proud, Sue. Bernie.
