When the Birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Became a Legal Holiday, then Gov. Edwin Edwards came to New Orleans and actually marched with us in our 1st Citywide Celebration, 3.2 miles, from Marcarty Middle School in The Lower 9th Ward, to the Municipal Auditorium in Treme. To the best of my knowledge and recollection, he was not only the 1st governor to do so, but the only ever since.

Several years later and along with then Rep. Renee Gill- Pratt, he issued and signed Proclamations commending every member of our March/Parade Committee specifically. That was a particularly arduous year for our committee, because the number of our Elementary Schools desiring to participate had increased substantially and our transportation fund got depleted. Mayor Bartholemy, Ms. Lois Pierce- Wright, Ms. Rita Hotard/Hotard Bus Company and myself, worked tirelessly into the night, to ensure none were left out. We would not have been able to pull off our March/Parade that year without all their efforts, especially Hotard who donated buses, drivers at time and 1/2, plus insurance gratis!
We thanked our Governor then and we´ll never forget his awards and special recognition for all our efforts! He was a one and only and maybe, just maybe someday, another? He had the gift for The Common Touch, not so Common in 2021!

Rest in Peace Governor,

This is a post of my younger brother on Facebook: "It was the summer of 1976. I was 7 years old and eating lunch at Burger King on the corner of Vets & Oaklawn when Governor Edwards walked in with a couple of his cronies. Nobody went up to him at first. My sister told me to go and shake the governor’s hand, so I walked up to him and said “hello Mr. Governor” and held out my right hand. Instead of taking my hand he chuckled and hugged me around my back and my arms went around his legs. That was the day that, after schmoozing with the whole restaurant, Governor Edwards walked out of Burger King with 2 little Dennis hand sized French fry grease stains on the lower leg of his beautiful white linen pants. RIP Governor. Thanks for the hug." RIP Governor - loved your humor and humanity.

As Governor, he convinced a New York Plastics Company to locate its next factory in Deridder, Louisiana. This 1 routine act by him enabled a quality of life for my Family (and many others) that most Families dream of. Years after starting, the CEO told us that the company was planning to locate elsewhere until the day his Secretary told him "The Governor of Louisiana is on the phone". He said it was then that all the plans changed and Louisiana would be selected.
I never had the opportunity to thank the Governor but his love of Louisiana changed lives for the better.
His life is proof that in America, there is no limit to what you can achieve.
Thank you Edwin

Gov. Edwards' Family,

I am sorry to hear about Gov. Edwards' passing and you have my condolences. As a kid in Baton Rouge, I had the privilege of meeting Gov. Edwards at the governor's mansion, along with a couple of my friends. He had recently been elected governor, but took the time to greet us (i.e. three blacks kids that had been fishing in the lakes near the capitol). He shook our hands and invited us to take a tour of the mansion, before he got into a black limousine. It was a proud moment to have met the governor of our state!

I will always remember Gov. Edwards, his service to Louisiana, and that summer day in 1972. May he rest in peace and may God comfort and keep you during this time.

EWE is a genuine legend in Louisiana politics , joining the ranks like Huey P Long and Earl K Long master in politics and in governing. He was an effective governor who can work with all kinds of people , crossing party lines to solve issues. He convinced his political opponents to like him regardless of issues. It was a privilege for me to serve under and to work with him as his appointee on the commission for the deaf for three terms. Prayers and condolences to the Edwards family. Again, he was and still is a colorful and larger than life figure in Louisiana as we will miss his presence in today’s times.

I would like to offer the condolences to Gov. Edwards family from the Louisiana Band of Choctaw and the Chaktaw Nation in Mississippi. My father was lifetime Principal Chief of the Louisiana Band of Choctaw and I remember Edwin Edwards meeting with Native American Indian Chiefs and the downtown Parades with the Governor. The Native American Indian people had given Edwin Edwards the name "Silver Fox". Edwin Edwards helped the Native American Indian Tribes and People, we owe a great deal to him as Native American Indian people of Louisiana as many others who he was willing to help. He will be greatly missed but not forgotten.

Governor Edwards was a dear friend of my late father, Lt. Col. Maurice Dece Watson (Ret) USAF, WWII/Korean Conflict. He worked on his 1976 campaign for him in north La. with their mutual friend, the late Gus Mijalis. Governor Edwards had a heart of gold and that is what propelled him to the heights he reached, politically. He truly cared about people and used used his savvy political instincts to do everything he could for Louisiana. The thoughts and prayers of a grateful Louisiana are with the Edwards family in the days to come. The Father didn't care that Governor Edwards was governor or about the past ... He just wanted His Child back Home with Him and He grabbed his hand yesterday morning and said, "Let's go My good and faithful servant" -- May the Grace and Mercy of Almighty God shine upon the family and may the Holy Spirit wrap you all in His Arms. God Bless Governor Edwards and God Bless Louisiana ...

I know people from Louisiana even though I am born and raised in Texas. Great State! Great People! And so many people that I have met and talked to loved Governor Edwards. Great Governor. Great.

Good people die everyday. Yet, not all of them affirm for us the goodness in humanity and leadership the way Edwin Edwards did. He passed away yesterday, but he left a legacy of positive experiences for anyone who took the time to know him -- which wasn’t a hard thing to do. Myself included, none of us really know him personally, but we can still learn from the legacy he left.

He was a great Governor. He had a passion for humbly serving the people of the Great State of Louisiana, and he served us well. He didn’t serve our state because it was easy. If that were true, Edwin wouldn’t have wanted anything to do with it. His passion and hard work led him to become a great leader with the ability to navigate a historically corrupt state government, lead the people to prosperity, and take tons of public criticism with finesse and grace.

Edwin loved people, and was willing to do the hard work it takes to build all kinds of relationships. Because he worked on the taxpayer’s dime, not everyone was satisfied. Yet, he made friends from enemies. He intentionally built the kind of relationships in the state that would bring people together. Because he was so good at relationship building, things got done.

It would have been easy for him to slip into an authoritative power mode, but Edwin's humility was the real power he had in the relationships he cultivated. Being humble helped him to be known as someone who acted out even while others in similar positions did not.

And of course, he was human. Edwin made his share of mistakes. The difference between him and other leaders is that he pondered those mistakes and he learned from them.

His humanity extended to his family, friends, and anyone else who knew him. People liked him. He was easy to know, like an open book. We all thought we knew him, but now we know that we would have liked to have known him even better and had him stay around longer.

I'm sure that if he could look back on who he was and what he did, I think he might be more than a little surprised to see that not only did his passion for leadership drive the state we all live in to be better than he found it, he also embodied the mantra of 'people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care'. Edwin not only made positive changes in the state, but he also cared about the people. He believed that positive change and caring about people were intricately linked.

It seems trite to say that Edwin will be missed, or that he went away too soon. But it’s true. The bottom line is that he was a great leader. And when you pull back the curtain of all that entails, you can also see that he was also a good person who cared about others. We can all learn a lot about leadership and humanity by following Edwin's example.
