My heartfelt condolences are offered to the family, many, many friends, colleagues and devoted army fans of Mr. Sam Gilliam. Mr. Sam Gilliam was an artist known for his groundbreaking work in abstract paintings on draped canvas. He was greatly admired by many fellow artists and all those who knew him. He became the first Black artist to represent the U.S. at the Venice Biennale cultural exhibition. May the love and many, many special memories you shared with your devoted loved one show how much your life was touched by him. May the God of comfort bless your grieving hearts with strength, loving kindness and peace as the world copes with the loss of Mr. Sam Gilliam. May his collections of art and legacy keep his memory alive forever. Thank you for Mr. Sam Gilliam's contribution to the world of Art.

In his first class of serious art students at McKinley High that 1962-63 school year, I recall he signed my yearbook, "May your pictures appear on the cover of time." A good and great teacher of the visual arts. All best to Sam and Dorothy's progeny. May he rest in peace.
