Thomas Shepherd Obituary

Shepherd, Thomas H. "Tom"

February 8, 1946 - August 26, 2025

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Thomas H. Shepherd, affectionately known as "Tom," age 79, of O'Fallon, Missouri. Tom died peacefully on August 26, 2025, surrounded by love.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Janice Shepherd (née Denny), his beloved children, Jeana (Eric) Newbauer of Lake Saint Louis, Missouri, and Tom H. Shepherd II of Bethesda, Maryland, and his four cherished grandchildren, Samantha (Harry), Sydney, Nicholas, and Delaney, who lovingly knew him as "Poppy." Tom also leaves behind his dear brother Phil L. Shepherd of New Hope, Pennsylvania, and his treasured great-granddaughter Blakely.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel H. Shepherd and Veda Malone Shepherd.

Born on February 8, 1946, in Jonesboro, Arkansas, Tom was raised in Lebanon, Tennessee. He attended Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, where he met the love of his life, Janice. After earning his degree in Agricultural Engineering, he enjoyed a long and successful career with Ralston Purina / Purina Mills, retiring after many years of dedicated service.

Tom was an avid golfer who relished time on the course with Janice and their many friends. He took great pride in teaching his daughter the game and was her constant coach and cheerleader. He was a loyal fan at his son's football games and an enthusiastic supporter of the Tennessee Volunteers, rarely missing a game. A passionate historian, Tom was an expert on the Civil War and led many groups in lively discussions about U.S. history. He was a master storyteller until the very end-captivating, funny, and a man of quiet and gentle wisdom. He was a true "classic."

Tom will be remembered as a man of deep love, subtle humor, and unwavering devotion to his family.Dad, you were deeply loved and are deeply missed.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Tom's honor to The American Cancer Society or Missouri Botanical Gardens.

So sorry to hear of Tom´s passing. Our sympathy to Jan and the kids.
Tom was our "rock" in the manufacturing side of our Purina business and brought many things to enhance the quality, service, and productivity of our manufacturing plants. He and Jan were a great team as they moved to different locations to manage several Purina plants and then onto St. Louis as Director of Manufacturing for the Company.
Tom will be missed. Our sympathy to Jan from all the manufacturing team at the checkerboard.

Your Dad was the best! So many great memories. Actually think we were invited to your wedding. A beautiful affair with the reception on the top floor of a very nice Clayton venue. So much love in your family. Not a surprise in knowing Tom. Please remember that Tom is appreciated and a legend by all that worked with and knew him. Best to all.

Im so sorry to hear of Tom's passing. He was a good friend and a pleasure to work with in the ole "American Region. He had good ideas about our business and a great advisor to me. Tom had a natural ability to play outstanding golf and always cleaned my clock on the course.
May God bless all the family at this difficult time.

I had the privilege of working with Tom at Purina for many years. He was always a true professional leading manufacturing, production and business initiatives, but was also a great guy. We shared an interest in the War of the Rebellion and had many great breakfast conversations. He expressed a serious interest in the war in the West and even suggested a retirement goal of writing a book entitled the War Between the Rivers. Civil War students will get it! I also enjoyed several rounds of golf with Tom. Truly one of the better golfers I ever played with. Talented and a student of the game, he was always willing to coach duffers like me. Again, prayers are with the family. However, you should celebrate a life well lived. May he rest in peace.
