JOHN MAHONEY Obituary

MAHONEY, John F. M.D. Age 73, of Quincy, passed away April 10 at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Celine T. (Totten); daughter Lesley A. O'Connell and her husband Patrick of South Dartmouth, son Jon D. Mahoney and his wife Rachel of Southington, CT, and son Andrew B. and his wife Sheila of Squantum; grandchildren Jack O'Connell of South Dartmouth, Landon, Eve, Norah, and Mary Mahoney of Southington, CT, and Stella Mahoney of Squantum. Brother of Elizabeth Mahoney of Braintree, Paul Mahoney and his wife Kathleen of Plymouth, and Margaret Mahoney Corbi. Brother-in-law of Linda Totten of Quincy, Nancy Ahearn and her husband Michael of Quincy, and Daniel Totten and his wife Lisa of Quincy. Nephew of Carol Powell of West Roxbury. Also survived by many dear nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was predeceased by his parents John F. and Margaret (Powell) Mahoney and his mother- and father-in-law Celine (McNeil) and Daniel Totten. Born in Boston and raised in Brighton, John graduated from Boston College High School, Boston College, and St. Louis University Medical School. He worked as a neurologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Milton, Carney Hospital, and Quincy Medical Center for 49 years. His passion for medicine and commitment to helping others were the cornerstones of his vibrant medical practice. John was relentless in solving even the most elusive neurological enigmas for his patients, always from a place of compassion. John's innate curiosity also drew him to books, documentaries, and music. His wide-ranging tastes ran the gamut from historical fiction to rock 'n' roll. He was a devoted fan of Boston's professional sports teams and in his younger days, he was an avid runner, completing ten Boston Marathons. He lived in Quincy for more than 40 years and enjoyed summers in Pocasset with his family. But most of all, John was a giver: of his time, his wisdom, and his heart. He made everyone feel like they were the most special person in the room with his welcoming smile. He will be remembered for his quick wit and quirky sense of humor, and his unwavering dedication to his family. Due to the current COVID-19 Health Department directives, services will be private and a memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at a later date. Dr. John. F. Mahoney was a very knowledgeable, caring, patient neurologist, who never gave up on a difficult case. I had the pleasure of knowing John for 38 years. May he rest in peace.

Thanks to Dr. Mahoney's skill and knowledge I was able to function normally for almost 10 years without the use of pain medication. As a result of that when the time (unfortunately) came that I could no longer walk without surgery
I had 10 years of excellent care that got me through.
Over the years we would become more friends than Dr. and Pt. and he would go on to help !y family through the loss of my father at the Carney where he consulted is as a.friend of the family and later to on to continue to treat me and my future wife for her chronic conditon.
He was THE best physician I ever knew and more importantly one of the nicest people I ever met in my life.
I am shocked and.saddened to hear of his passing.
I would like to pass my condolences from the entire Burke family to Celine and Dr. Mahoney's( I could NEVER call him John) children and somehow try to let them how much he genuinely helped so many people.
RIP
Sorry to Celine and children for your loss.

The world has lost such a brillant, kind, caring, knowledgeable and sometimes funny man. It took me 30 years to finally find a doctor that didnt make me feel like just another file. I knew from the moment I met him that he truly cared and was there to help. I only wish I found him sooner then 6 months ago. Sending family friends coworkers and patients my sincerest condolences. I'm not sure how many people remember that early on in his career Dr Mahoney was the Boston Fire Department Medical Officer. It was a troubling time in the city. John protected many firefighters from lay offs by keeping them on medical leave. It was a balancing act but he never wavered. He was also my neurologist for a time. After a fruitless work up with a surgical colleague at Carney , which frustrated him as much as it did me, he referred me to the neurosurgeon who took care of his mother. IIt was relief to be pain free after surgery. He was a true gentleman, with deep seated ethical beliefs. Plus a terrific doctor. My sincere condolences to his wife and family. Dr. Mahoney (or John as he always referred to himself) was my doctor for many years while I served as a Quincy Police Officer. Without John's knowledge, dedication and most importantly compassion, I would have never been able to continue and finish my career of 33 years. John understood the most important word a doctor has to know, empathy. While he could not feel my pain he understood what I was feeling. When you had an appointment with Dr. Mahoney you always saw Dr. Mahoney . You didn't see his PA or his NP, you saw him. He made time for you and made you feel like you were his only patient. John and I shared a deep love for the Red Sox and invariably my visits would always end with a discussion about our favorite team. The world has lost a brilliant doctor but more importantly it has lost a beautiful man. God Bless you Dr. John and may you Rest In Peace forever.
