H. Campbell Obituary

H. LeRoy "Monk" Campbell, 91, died Wednesday evening, January 3, 2007, at the Northwest Hospital in Randallstown, Md. Born October 27, 1915 in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Harry Campbell and Elizabeth Jane Burkette Cooper. He was the husband of the late Mildred Louise Eckard Campbell, his wife of 64 years who died June 25, 2001. He was the retired sheriff of Carroll County, having served as sheriff from 1962 until 1982. Before becoming sheriff, he worked at O'Farrell Brothers, Bohn Pontiac and American Ring & Hammer. He grew up and attended public schools in Apollo, Pa. He received an athletic scholarship to Western Maryland College and lettered both in football and baseball. While in college, he played both in the Blue Grey Game and the North South Bowl and was named as honorable mention All American. While attending Western Maryland College, he was offered opportunities in professional sports with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Washington Redskins and the Cincinnati Redlegs baseball team. He joined the Washington Redskins in 1937 to remain close to his wife's family. for over five years he played both professional and semi pro football and throughout the years he was actively involved in youth football and baseball. He was a member of the Westminster United Methodist Church, was active in the Republican Party and enjoyed politics. He was named to the Western Maryland College Hall of Fame and the Carroll County Sports Hall of Fame. He was a life member of the Littlestown Eagles Aerie 2226, Westminster Eagles, member of Westminster Moose Lodge 1381, Westminster Elks Lodge 2277 and Auxiliary to VFW Post 467, Optimist Club and coached Little League Football, member and Past Grand Chancellor of Charity Lodge 58 Knights of Pythias and member of the former Uniform Ranks Knights of Pythias and member of the Maryland Sheriff Association. He is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Lois Campbell Yates and Victor J. Yates of Scottsdale, Ariz. and many friends. Funeral services will be held on Sunday at the Fletcher Funeral Home, 254 E. Main St., Westminster, Md. at 1 p.m. with his pastor, the Rev. Dr. David Highfield officiating. Interment will be Monday 10 a.m. in Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Finksburg with honors from the Carroll County Sheriff's Office. The procession will leave the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Carroll Hospice, 95 Carroll St., Wesminster, MD 21157.

I am Louise's friend, Barbara Ann. I have had lunch with your dad and Louise several times in MD and in FL. He was a good man and wonderful friend to my dear friend Louise. He will surely be missed by all who knew him.
