Baird Jones Obituary

JONES--Baird Baird Jones, 53, died last week at home of natural causes. Lively and irreverent, he blazed a swath through New York nightlife as a writer, photographer, party promoter, art critic and raconteur. The son of the late Cranston and Jean Campbell Jones, Baird had a notable collection of academic credentials, from The Buckley School, Groton, Columbia University (undergraduate and two masters degrees) and NYU (a law degree and master of social work), all printed on his legendary nightclub party passes. A witty and skillful interviewer, he wrote under his own byline for "The East Village Eye," various British tabloids, the Daily News "Rush & Malloy" column, artnet.com, and contributed freelance items to others. He was the author and photographer of "Mark Kostabi and the East Village Art Scene 1983-1987." His intentionally provocative and daring promotion of nightclubs, from Studio 54 to Webster Hall, earned him the tabloid nickname "Bad Boy Baird." Behind this invented persona, Baird found solace in art and in helping artists. He will be missed by his family, his friends and the many people all over New York who enjoyed his parties. Fittingly, a memorial party is in the works. He is survived by his sister Abigail Jones, his brother-in-law Jeffrey Mandell, his niece Juliana and his nephew Alex Mandell, all of Beverly Hills, CA.

It was only years later that I learned about Baird's passing. Used to look forward to receiving his party invitations--both for the design and for the chance to talk with Baird and others at some fun New York clubs.

From the first time I met Baird in the early 90's he made me feel like family.
He obviously felt the same way as he
always delighted in barbing me whenever our paths crossed, which was almost weekly throughout the years. I always looked forward to seeing him at events as a divine sign
that the world truly was not changing. Baird, like me, was a serious person who liked to have fun. His kindness on a personal level
will never be forgotten and I hope the destination chosen for him in the afterlife is one that I can visit someday - "Where's the meatloaf Ma!"

My condolences to Baird Jones loved ones and entourage. It was a shock to read of his passing. Baird was a great spirit, and I always enjoyed his parties. We hadn't crossed paths recently as my club kid days have long been over, but I think I still have stacks of "passes" he mailed me for Studio 54 and the Underground somewhere at my parent's house. Baird Jones passing snuffs out the last burning embers of a certain era in NYC nightlife I will always fondly remember.
