Edward (Ted) May Obituary

1949 - 2020
In memory of Ted May on the anniversary of his passing on March 10, 2020. Ted was a successful director of television series and specials, most notably as a primary director of Sesame Street for many years, where his work earned him nine Emmy Awards. Ted was born on May 12, 1949 to Edward and Jane (Doyle) May in New York City. He grew up in Malverne, Long Island and attended Chaminade High School and Fordham University, where he studied communications with Marshall McCluhan. Ted also hosted a weekly radio show on Fordham's WFUV for several years. He was the first Professor of Audio Production in the film and television program at NYU Tisch School of the Arts. A lifelong New Yorker, Ted had a broad range of interests and insatiable curiosity. He was an avid chess and bridge player and attained Master status in both, and travelled the world with his wife. He was generous to a fault, even ordering gifts for family and friends from his hospital bed. He was kind and thoughtful, with an unparalleled wit. He left the world a better place, which was his goal. We love him and miss him every day.

I knew Ted very well during his college years at Fordham, and in fact shared a small apartment with him during our senior years together. After graduation, we went our separate ways and lost touch, and I only learned of his passing in November 2021 during the 50th anniversary of the Class of ´71. Ted was a warm, witty, and extremely bright young man, and his interests and passions were a great inspiration to me and to my career path in communications. He made me a much better chess player, too! I will always regard him fondly and I am grateful to have known him. Rest in peace. Ted. BOB OAKLEY, Mattapoisett MA.
