Gilbert Ollestad Obituary

Gilbert Ollestad

Gilbert Ollestad, 89, was born on Yukon Island outside of Seldovia, Alaska on December 27, 1923 to Tollak and Lucille Ollestad where his family worked a fox farm. He passed away early on August 10, 2013 in Seward Alaska. He grew up in Seldovia, one of ten children and in his youth he worked fish traps, hunted and gathered berries and continued to love a good berry patch.

He worked as a commercial fisherman all of his life in Cook Inlet. He also fished in Kodiak, the Bering Sea and in the early days of commercial sailboat fishing in Bristol Bay. He married in 1947 and with his wife Anna June moved to Seward and raised his five children. The family then moved to Seattle in 1962. He retired from the longshoreman's union having worked the docks in Seward and Seattle.

He was a respected leader in the Alaskan Native community serving on the board of directors of Chugach Alaska Corporation for 25 years from its inception. He had a life long affinity for the beauty of nature having spent so much of his life in the great outdoors. He remained active throughout his life and loved a good brisk walk. He was always concerned about the well being of others, willing to lend a helping hand whenever needed. He maintained his sense of humor entertaining us with his rendition of many stories and characters from his life. He will be remembered for his kind, gracious, benevolent and loving spirit. He was the patriarch of our family, a dear and precious soul and will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his eldest son Gilbert (Bovitz) and eight of his siblings. He is survived by his sons Burt, Jeff and Tollak and daughter Onnolee, their mother Anna June, along with 5 grandchildren, three great grandchildren, sister Thelma Patton and partner Caroline Toloff.

A celebration of his life will be held on August 24, 2013. For details of the service contact: [email protected]

Dearest Family, God placed our dear Uncle Gilbert in this family so we could all be blessed by his true loving and compassionate heart. when my Mother, his sister had had to go to Seattle to treat her T.B I was sent to live with his family in Seward, the kindness and love I was blessed with in his home has and will remain with me forever, children of his, my heart grieves for you as you bid him Bon Voyage, but I know and trust our dear Lord has him in His loving care, he is with "Bovitz now and we shall meet up with them when the Lord calls us home. I bet Patti Lu gave you a big smile and hug. I love you Grace Marie

Uncle Gilbert was the best Uncle anyone could ever have. He had a way about him; he made you feel like you were the most special person in the room. He showed he loved you and truly cared about you. He listened and he shared his life. I am very proud to say he was my Uncle. I will miss this great man, "Uncle Gilbert"

Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come.
Thy will be done in earth,
As it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive them that trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
The power, and the glory,
For ever and ever.
Amen.

Dearest Uncle Gilbert, What a great man you were, and I will never forget you. You were kind, compassionate and had a gentle heart, wonderful smile and great sense of humor and so much love that you felt for your family. You had the most caring of hearts.. I admired you so much, and I will treasure the brief time that I saw you here in Anchorage before you went back to Seward. Rest In Peace.
