John Levis Obituary

John P. Levis Jr., age 71, a Middleburg, VA resident, died on November 16, 2005, at INOVA Fairfax Hospital, Falls Church, Virginia, surrounded by family and friends.
Born November 7, 1934, in San Francisco, California to the late Charlotte R. and J. Preston Levis, Mr. Levis moved to Toledo, Ohio in 1938. He attended the Westminster School in Simsbury, Connecticut and graduated from Ottawa Hills High School in Toledo. Before his service in the United States Army, Mr. Levis attended Denison University in Granville, Ohio.
Mr. Levis moved to Middleburg, Virginia in 1985 and became involved in a number of community causes and organizations. He served on the board of directors of the Hill School, The Middleburg Community Center, The Piedmont Child Care Center and the Advisory Board of the Windy Hill Foundation.
Longtime friend and survivor, Helen Wiley described Mr. Levis as, "a quiet humanitarian who often gave his time and money in ways that truly made a difference. John's life here in Middleburg was as a servant to his community. He helped in ways when often no one knew who was behind the initiative. John was a friend to the entire community and served them as if they were family."
He is survived by his children, Margot Levis Thompson of Portsmouth New Hampshire and John P. Levis III of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; five grandchildren and sisters, Harriet Levis McFarlane of Irene, South Africa and Annette Levis Boice of Toledo, Ohio.
Mr. Levis was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Upperville, Virginia, where memorial services were held on November 19th, 2005. A private burial preceded the memorial service at the Trinity Church Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the John P. Levis, Jr. Fund for Students and Families at The Hill School, Post Office Box 65, Middleburg, Virginia 20118 or the charity of one's choice.
