On Monday, May 8, 2006, of Alexandria, VA. He was born September 27, 1922 in Champaign, IL. He graduated Portage Wisconsin High School in 1940. He completed two years of music study at the University of Wisconsin Madison, before enlisting with the army in 1942. He left the army in 1945 to return to the University of Wisconsin where he earned Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in 1949. He then went on to become to the Assistant Professor of Music at San Jose State College in California. He was recalled to active service and became Warrant Officer Band Leader with duty at Ft. Bliss, TX, Korea, Tokyo, Japan, West Point, NY (director of cadet glee club), Heidleburg, Germany and Ft. Monroe, VA. He retired in 1971 as Associate Band Master, U.S. Army Band, Ft. Myer, VA, receiving the Legion of Merit Citation. Upon military retirement he was appointed head of Special Services Division, Alexandria Libraries. He earned a Masters degree from Catholic University in Library Science. He retired from the library system after 18 years of service. He served as Quality Assurance Consultant, Library of Congress, Division for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. He has been a member of the American Band Masters Association since 1965, a life member of the Virginia and National Federations of Music Clubs, life member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Music Fraternity and the Masonic Affiliations with West Point Lodge 877, Sojourners, Heroes of '76 and Scottish Rite. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Patricia Pope Boots. The family will receive friends on Friday, May 19 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at EVERLY WHEATLEY FUNERAL HOME.
