Description
In 1963, two funeral directors brought into being their vision for funeral service in Murray and Calloway County. James Blalock and James Coleman had worked together for the former Max H. Churchill Funeral Home. The pair opened their own funeral service facility in the lower level of a building located at the corner of Fifth and Elm Street in Murray. The business soon outgrew the original location, and the decision was made in 1968 to construct the facility that serves the community today. Mr. Coleman's wife, Betty obtained her funeral directors license and along with life-long Murray resident Jerry L. Lassiter, the firm served hundreds of Calloway County families. Declining health forced the retirement of James Blalock and Mr. and Mrs. Coleman became sole owners of the business. In January 1990, the business was sold to a partnership consisting of Mr. Lassiter and brothers Keith and Kelvin York. The firm became known as Blalock-Coleman and York Funeral Home. The York brothers soon acquired full ownership and served the community with distinction for almost 25 years. Kelvin York died on December 23rd, 2013, and Keith then assumed sole ownership. In February 2022, the funeral home was acquired by John Warren and Melanie M. Nix. John Warren is the son of the late Ben and Jane Nix who were life-long residents of Calloway County. John is a 1984 graduate of Calloway County High School, holds bachelor and master's degrees from Murray State University and began his career in funeral service in 1993. He completed his training in funeral service at John A. Gupton College in Nashville, Tennessee, where he also served as a faculty member. He has served families at funeral homes in both Calloway and Marshall counties and is a licensed funeral director and embalmer in both Kentucky and Tennessee. Melanie is a 1986 graduate of Murray High School. She is the daughter of Calloway County natives Charles and Agnes McClain and the late Mildred McClain. The couple are the parents of two children, Hannah Elizabeth Nix, a junior at Calloway County High School and Benjamin Alexander Nix, who is a student at Calloway County Middle School. Blalock-Coleman Funeral Home is fortunate to have a family of dedicated staff members. Ricky and Sunni Garland are both licensed funeral directors and embalmers. Kenneth Reynolds and David Balentine also assist in the day-to-day operations. The organization fondly remembers long-time employees Jack Norsworthy, Bobbie Wilcox, and Damon Mathis. The Nix family, along with Blalock-Coleman's team of professionals embrace the legacy of James Blalock and James and Betty Coleman and pledges to work diligently to meet our mission to provide the highest quality funeral services as families seek to honor the lives of their loved ones.
