Description
Robert Moynihan, President of Central Chapels, became a funeral director in 1983. Two years later, the Central Chapel was built on the Southwest Side of Chicago, across the street from Chicago’s Midway Airport, at 6158 South Central Avenue. Central Chapel was established at a time when many firms had been sold to high cost, impersonal, national funeral chains. It was strategically built 4 blocks from a Blake-Lamb Chapel, owned by the SCI Dignity chain. And the concept was to serve one family at a time offering a homelike setting and "living room comfort." Central Chapel has all the amenities of a large firm: spacious coffee and reception room, on-premise casket display yet not the high costs and impersonal treatment that we often experience when dealing with large institutions. Central Chapel is unique in offering undivided attention to each family served and offering a quiet, private environment for people in the days following the death of a loved one. THOMAS McINERNEY’S SONS FUNERAL HOME, now McINERNEY CENTRAL CHAPEL, on the South Side at 4635 South Wallace Street, is the oldest funeral home in Chicago. The firm was established in 1873 and the landmark Wallace Street mortuary was built as funeral home in 1893. Thomas McInerney’s Sons is a trusted name for funerals for nearly 150 years. They have served generation after generation in the same families while continually attracting new client families. They have a sterling reputation among families who have worked for our city including Chicago Police Department and Chicago Fire Department families. Thomas McInerney’s Sons had a second location from 1970 to 2010 on the Southwest Side of Chicago at 7901 South Komensky Avenue. That location has relocated to our Central Avenue chapel. The merger of CENTRAL CHAPEL with THOMAS McINERNEY’S SONS was a natural one. Our Central Avenue location is convenient for families that have relocated to the Southwest Side from the Bridgeport and Canaryville neighborhoods, as well as families that used to rely on the McInerney 79th Street Chapel. At the same time, CENTRAL CHAPEL has always served families in the Bridgeport, Canaryville, Back of the Yards and Brighton Park neighborhoods, so the Wallace Street chapel is an added convenience for these folks. The unique contribution that CENTRAL CHAPEL and McINERNEY CENTRAL CHAPEL makes to 21st century funeral service in Chicago area is that it integrates tradition with innovation, affordability with distinction, providing all of this by a remarkably exceptional, caring staff and seasoned funeral directors -- on the shoulders of a century and a half of service by our McInerney founders. Robert Moynihan, Funeral Director and President of Central Chapel, has often been described as the quintessential funeral director. A gifted public speaker on the outside and a stickler for details on the inside, Bob Moynihan believes two things passionately: 1. Every life has meaning and should be honored. 2. Funerals are too expensive. Robert Moynihan became a Funeral Director in 1983 and acquired the Ketcham Funeral Chapel, one of Chicago’s oldest funeral firms, in its centennial year. The firm was later renamed LANE-MOYNIHAN, in memory of DeWitt Lane, a mentor of Bob’s who had a reputation for sincere, honest, sensibly priced service. Moynihan also brings his past experience as Managing Partner of Lain-Sullivan and Lain-Fern Funeral Homes where he learned the importance of providing high quality and unique services while attracting more and more families due to being cost sensitive. Bob Moynihan worked with and for some of the best funeral directors in Chicago, learning different things from each of them. Abiding gratitude to these mentors: Leonard Tobuch, of Ketcham Funeral Chapel and Doty-Panozzo Funeral Home, James Melka, of Beverly Ridge Funeral Home, Peter Brady of Brady-Gill Funeral Home, Michael Heeney, of Heeney-Laughlin Sons Funeral Home, Margaret McKeon and Thomas J. McKeon, of McKeon Funeral Home, James R. Sheehy and Jack Sheehy, of John J. Sheehy & Sons, Jerry Sullivan, of Cremation Society of Illinois, Marcus Jaeger, of Countryside Funeral Homes, and DeWitt Lane, of Lackore Nichols and Lane. We are proud of our past but it's who we are today that is making a difference, making us Chicago's leader in distinctive and affordable funeral care. Everyone knows how devastating loosing someone is and finding a funeral home that can both have great service and also have compassion is tough but I do have to say that Central Chapel went above and beyond to make sure that we had all we needed. Jennifer and her staff were warm and kind and also did everything to make sure that my moms life celebration was perfect. I was afraid of dealing with cold inconsiderate individuals who only wanted to sell a product but wow... This was the total opposite and we were so happy that we chose this establishment for my moms farewell. Thank you so much for all that you did to make sure we were ok and this celebration of life for my mother was beautiful. She also looked amazing thank you!!!!!

Unfortunately, our family was not able to use Central Chapel. However, the service that was provided by Anne was literally outstanding. I called multiple homes and they did not provide the same service or information that Anne had. She offered options and gave me estimates for prices in a time need. She also gave guidance for many parts outside of the funeral service they provide. We will definitely keep them in mind in the future.

I would highly recommend Central Chapel to anyone. I recently lost my father to Brain Cancer and my family & I were devastated and couldn't think for ourselves. And we still are..we miss him dearly.. but Bob, Ann and Patti went above & beyond to help us. They made things alot easier, they thought of the little details that we didn't have time to think of. My dads funeral went smoothly thanks to this people who helped us out in many ways. My family & I are very grateful for all that you guys did. Prices around our area were ridiculous and this place was very reasonable. Thank you Central Chapel

Thank you, Bob and Central Chapels staff!! Your patience and hospitality was greatly appreciated, especially under these difficult times. I definitely recommend their services!!! I'm glad that some people can still show compassion and understanding during this covid outbreak. My father in laws funeral service was beautifully arranged. May he rest in paradise, for he is now in Gods Grace.

called around first other Funeral Homes when looking for help for my brother James. I was very shocked by the prices other funeral homes were charging, and they didn't seem very sympathetic or seem to care if they got my business. My sister then called and checked with Central Chapel as she use to live in the area. Bob was so kind, helpful and understanding. Their prices were so reasonable. But Bob and Ann took care of everything and made the sad time easier with their help and understanding. They seem to do it truly from the heart. Central Chapel deserves 10 stars ********** They make a terrible situation easier to go thru. Thank you so much for all you did for my brother and family.
